Six sophomores from North Haven High School have set a goal of collecting 50 donated musical instruments through their “Spreading the Music” project.

North Haven High School students Carly Fresher, Diego Esponda, Elliza Sayed, Olivia Stefanik, Molly Coyle, and Kayleigh Meehan have been working since this past Summer to accomplish their goal of “Spreading The Music” by providing gently used musical instruments to elementary school students in North Haven who may not be able to afford to purchase or rent instruments, and to allow elementary students to try a variety of instruments at no cost. The students have all participated in the North Haven musical programs throughout their years in the North Haven Education System and they have a sense of pride as they are able to give back to their community.

These six sophomores have already held collection events and publicized their efforts to the students and parents of current middle school and high school students in town. However, they are still looking for additional donated instruments and cash donations to assist with the cost of cleaning the instruments before they can be passed on the elementary schools students for future use. Cash donations will also be used to purchase reeds and items for the instruments that require such accessories.

These students are being mentored by Mr. Bevan Moore, a history teacher at North Haven High School, who is also the Director of the Future Problem Solving Program. When completed, this project will be entered into a statewide competition for community problem solving as part of the Connecticut State Competition of the Future Problem Solving Program. All of the students working on this project were State Champions or runners-up in the individual or team written problem solving category in the Spring of 2018, and went on to compete at the International Competition in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. They have now teamed up to compete in the Community Problem Solving event for the 2019 State Competition of the Future Problem Solving Program, hoping to qualify the for the next International Conference to be held in June, 2019.

Anyone interested in donating an instrument can e-mail to spreadingthemusic2019@gmail.com by February 1st with the type of instrument and contact information for the person making the donation.
