01/08/2017 11:00 PMYear after year it’s the most popular New Year resolution: lose weight. But for most, what starts strong and with good intentions ends with a plate full of fried seafood and a sinking feeling of guilt.
2017 can be different! Starting January 23rd, the Valley Shore YMCA will be assisting hundreds of local residents lose those pounds quicker than a snowman loses its waistline on a sandy hot beach through its annual weight loss competition, the Shoreline Slimdown. The Slimdown combines good food, fun and progressively challenging workouts and some friendly competition.
“The Shoreline Slimdown is a group weight loss challenge that focuses on nutrition, exercise and goal setting in a supportive environment,” said Chris Pallatto, Executive Director. “The challenge sets teams against each other to see who can lose the most weight.”
Last year nearly 100 people participated in the challenge, forming teams with their friends, families or coworkers. Collectively, the participants lost over an amazing 510 lbs! “I can't believe the transformation that has occurred during the Slimdown Challenge,” writes Todd Jones, Slimdown Contestant. “I feel great and now know how to properly use the majority of the equipment and do exercises that will help me the rest of my life. My goal was 30-40 pounds and I lost 43!”
Teams of four compete other teams to lose the most weight. Weekly challenges and monthly team challenges keep contestants motivated and engaged throughout the 12 week program. Supported by special workshops that focus on nutrition, stretching, shoe fitting and overall wellbeing, contestants receive the support and advice to make healthy lifestyles changes that result in weight loss.
New for 2017, the Shoreline Slimdown will feature the Company Cup! A large trophy that will be present to the company team that loses the most weight during the challenge. The Shoreline Slimdown is open to YMCA members and non-members. Contestants do not need to have a team to join, individuals or pairs will be assigned a team based on activity level, interests and age. Fees to participate in this 12 week program are $100 for YMCA members and $200 for non-members.
