We have been in Bushenyi for a few days. Our first stop was Jonas' house! We were greeted by Jonas, her family and friends. It was pouring rain and we gathered underneath a tarp for spoken word and musical greetings. Jonas' family spoke and thanked Martha for everything she had done. Jonas was hurt very bad years ago and lost both arms. With the help of Hanger Prosthetics, a nurse named Kathy Wargo and Call To Care, Jonas was flown to the US to receive prosthetics for both arms. She can now garden, cook and take care of her six beautiful children!
The next day we went to church where our friend John Kateeba and his family belong. Joyce, John's wife, gave a heartfelt sermon. I sang "Amazing Grace" and everyone joined in before Joyce's sermon . That was followed by a visit to the Faith school with Jonas and her family. Faith school has helped Jonas and has given her kids an opportunity to stay in school during this turbulent time when, otherwise, they wouldn't have had a chance. We were greeted with song and dance by the children, ate a traditional Ugandan meal and deposited medical supplies along with candy (sweeties) for everyone! They made each of us a wooden plaque to thank us for visiting which I can't wait to hang in my room. Martha was given a handmade portrait along with a few other special things! (Ben, don't let this go to her head ;) ) We left that day in a thunderstorm but luckily made it back to town.
The next day we drove to the Mitooma school where we sang and listened to traditional Ugandan folk songs, watched the kids perform plays and dance! We then took a tour around the school and saw the many books Call To Care has helped purchase for them.
We said our goodbyes which is always the hardest part. Then we drove to the tea plantations and bought a few boxes of Igara tea. The cool thing about this tea is of course the fact that its grown in Uganda but also when you purchase a box, you're helping to support over 10,000 smallholder tea farmers!! Can't go wrong with that. you can find and taste this amazing tea in Madison @ Savvy tea downtown.
Today we drove to Lake Mburo park where we'll be staying for the next 2 days! On our way in we saw a few zebras, monkeys, Kob, baboons, and many other different animals.
Just watched the sunset over the park and now listening to the animals and insects sing us their native songs as we eat :)
