About Lee Howard
Lee Howard is The Day’s business editor and writes a weekly column called What’s Going On. In 2009, he won one of the most prestigious awards in Connecticut Journalism, the Theodore Driscoll Award for Investigative Journalism. He also has won a National Literary Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Judy Lacy Award for tennis writing from the New England Tennis Association and a fellowship from the National Press Foundation. In Howard’s long career at The Day, he has been managing editor of The Times Community News Group, running up to nine weekly newspapers from Lyme to Westerly; Sunday editor; Page 1 editor, Region editor, Marketplace magazine editor, copy editor, real estate editor and business reporter. He has won first-place awards in numerous categories, including general column writing, front page layout, feature page layout, feature writing, news series, feature series, photo layout and business writing.
Outside of The Day, Howard is known for community involvement as founding president of the Eastern Connecticut Tennis Association and president of both Performers’ Co-op, a regional performing arts organization, and the William Billings Institute of American Music, an organization devoted to exposing the public to music written by Americans, as well as currently singing with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus. His writing has appeared in Connecticut Magazine and Racquet Time magazine. With a master’s degree in interactive communication from Quinnipiac University, he has taught journalism at Connecticut College, Mitchell College and the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
Lee lives in Waterford with his wife, Libby Friedman.
