Girls’ Soccer Falls in States, Several All-Conference Athletes Announced
Volleyball
Valley volleyball hosted Morgan on Oct. 15 and won 3-1. Regan Grow had 19 kills, and Nia Marchese had 11. Grow also had five aces. Hellen Manco recorded 29 digs, Marchese had 18, and Grow and Hallie Moore each had 14. Moore had 29 assists.
The team then traveled to Old Lyme the next day and won 3-0. Grow had 14 kills, Moore had 15 digs, and Kellyn Kolber had 29 assists.
On Oct. 21, the Warriors hosted Canton and took a 3-2 loss. Grow had 20 kills in the contest to go along with four blocks. Moore had 25 digs, and Kolber had 17. Kolber also had 43 assists.
Valley closed out the regular season at home vs. Waterford on Oct. 22 and won 3-1. Grow had 18 kills, Moore had 20 digs, Marchese had 19 digs, and Rubee Cecchini had 13. Kolber had 38 assists.
After securing its Shoreline Conference Tournament title, Valley entered the Class S State Tournament as the No. 2 seed, earning a bye in the first round.
In the second round on Nov. 6, Valley hosted No. 15 Norwich Tech and won 3-0. Cecchini and Grow each had eight kills. Moore had seven digs, and Kolber had 27 assists.
In the quarterfinals on Nov. 8, Valley hosted No. 10 Canton and blanked the opponent 3-0. Grow had 14 kills, and Cecchini had 13. Grow also added five blocks. Cecchini had 16 digs, while Moore had 13. Kolber added 28 assists.
Grow and Marchese earned spots on the All-Shoreline Conference First Team, while Kolber and Moore were named to the Second Team. Cecchini was an Honorable Mention. Grow was also named the conference’s Player of the Year, and Head Coach Jaimie Bickelhaupt was named Coach of the Year.
Girls’ Soccer
The Valley girls’ soccer team hit the road to Thomaston on Oct. 14 and took a 5-2 loss. Makaylah Spencer scored both goals, and Ella Smith had an assist. Emma Reilly recorded four saves in net.
On Oct. 16, the Warriors played host to Canton and won 3-1. Spencer scored all three goals for Valley, and Ella Smith had an assist.
Valley ended the week at home vs. Portland on Oct. 17 and won 3-2. Ella Smith scored two goals, and Sara Delouchry scored one. Delouchry also had two assists, while Madelyn Reibold had one.
On Oct. 21, the Warriors ended the regular season at Westbrook and won 3-0. Spencer scored two goals, and Hannah Smith scored one. Reibold added two assists in the contest.
On Oct. 24 in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, Valley traveled to Coginchaug and lost 3-0.
The Warriors entered the Class S State Tournament as the No. 10 seed. In the first round on Nov. 1, the team hosted No. 23 Wheeler and won 9-2. Goals were scored by Peyton McIntyre, Reibold (three), Ella Smith (two), Delouchry, and Spencer (two).
In the second round on Nov. 4, the Warriors traveled to No. 7 Morgan and fell 5-0. Reilly recorded five saves in goal.
Reibold earned a spot on the All-Shoreline Conference First Team this fall, and McIntyre was named to the Second Team. Spencer was an Honorable Mention.
Football
The Valley/Old Lyme football team played host to North Branford on Oct. 18 and won 38-32. Giovanni Winters threw for four touchdowns in the contest, while Chase King and Max Novak each had a rushing touchdown. Tommy Troy hauled in all four of the touchdown passes. Connor Dickson had 14 tackles.
On Oct. 25, the team hosted Cromwell-Portland and lost 21-16. Winters threw one touchdown pass, and Troy added a rushing touchdown. Troy also had seven total tackles.
On Nov. 1, Valley traveled to Weaver and won 36-6. Winters threw three touchdown passes, which were caught by Troy (two), and Cameron Atkinson. Alex Krol and Michael Spencer each had a rushing touchdown. Charlie Zelek added 14 tackles.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Shoreline Co-op girls’ swimming and diving team defeated Rocky Hill 102-72 on Oct. 15 to extend its winning record to 5-0. High school swimmers from Haddam-Killingworth, Valley Regional, Lyme-Old Lyme, and Old Saybrook combined to take first and third place in the opening 200-yard medley relay and held the lead for the remainder of the meet.
Prior to Rocky Hill, the team won dual meets against Ledyard (93-76), Windsor Locks (86-84), Suffield (96-65), and Waterford (95-81).
“As proud as I am of the wins, I’m even prouder of how well these girls have come together as a team that supports and encourages each other,” said Head Coach Alison Karam. “This an awesome group of girls in and out of the pool.”
Five team members have already automatically qualified for this year’s state championships: Liv Macaluso (H-K-senior), Claire Johnson (Valley-freshman), Phoebe Spallone (Valley-freshman), Maggie Miller (H-K-junior), and the team’s only diver, Bethany Erkkila (Valley-junior).
Competing for Shoreline Co-Op in the Rocky Hill meet were: Aria Cummings (freshman, H-K), Erkkila, Johnson, Elsa Shatraw (sophomore, H-K), Emma Wakelee (junior, Old Saybrook), Gianna Dabkowski (sophomore, H-K), Lauren Thebeau (freshman, H-K), Maddie Cummins (freshman, Lyme-Old Lyme), Miller, Olive Forristall (sophomore, H-K), Olivia Campo (senior, H-K), Macaluso (senior, H-K), Spallone, Rose Dimmock (junior, Lyme-Old Lyme), Sasha Dziebel (junior, Old Saybrook), Sofia Campo (senior, H-K), Sophia Langer (sophomore, H-K), Veronica Pypa (senior, H-K), and Zi Abbott (sophomore, H-K).
The 200-yard Medley Relay team of Johnson, Sofia Campo, Macaluso, and Dabkowksi took first place, and the team comprised of Shatraw, Forristall, Pypa, and Spallone took third. Miller won the 200 freestyle, and Macaluso qualified for states in the 200 Individual Medley (IM), Forristall took second in that event.
In the 50 freestyle, Dabkowski took first place, Dimmock took second, and Dziebel took third. Erkkila placed first in the diving. In the 100 butterfly, Macaluso placed first and qualifed for states, while Johnson qualified for states and placed second. Miller won the 100 freestyle, and Spallone placed third. In the 500 freestyle, Shatraw took second, and Thebeau took third.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Dabkowski, Sofia Campo, Miller, and Macaluso placed first. Their third place counterparts were Dimmock, Wakelee, Dziebel, and Pypa. Spallone won the 100 backstroke and qualified for states, and Johnson placed second. Forristall won the 100 breaststroke, while Sofia Campo took second. In the 400 freestyle relay, the second place team was Miller, Olivia Campo, Spallone, and Johnson. In third place was Shatraw, Thebeau, Dimmock, and Forristall.
Boys’ Soccer
On Oct. 14, Valley boys’ soccer traveled to Amistad and won 2-0. Tucker Norton scored for the Warriors, and they also scored on an own goal. Nathan Crown had an assist, and Kenny Batt recorded five saves.
On Oct. 16, the team hosted Westbrook for Senior Night and won 8-0. Goals were scored by Patrick Finnegan (two), Birch Whitbeck, Kevin Remache, Norton, Crown, Caleb Winkley, and Owen Ingram. Batt had four saves, and Payton Reibold had zero.
The Warriors hosted Coginchaug for its regular season finale on Oct. 19 and took a 2-2 tie. Goals were scored by Ingram and Crown. Assists were credited to Norton and Gavin Abderhalden, and Batt had 12 saves.
In the first round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament on Oct. 24, Valley took a 4-1 road loss vs. Old Saybrook.
The Warriors then opened up the Class S State Tournament as the No. 11 seed. They played host to No. 22 Housatonic Regional in the first round on Nov. 1 and won 3-2.
In the second round on Nov. 5, Valley traveled to No. 6 Granby Memorial and fell 4-3.
Norton was named to the All-Shoreline Conference First Team for the Warriors, and Batt earned a spot on the Second Team. Joe Welch was an Honorable Mention.
Field Hockey
Lucy Resnisky earned a spot on the All-Shoreline Conference First Team for Valley field hockey, and she was also the Patsy Kamercia Award Winner. Amelia Giantonio was named to the Second Team, and Catalena Goldberg was an Honorable Mention.
