Girls’ Swimming Wins on Senior Night, Cross Country Teams Impress in Conference and State Meets

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

On Oct. 15, the Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team defeated Jonathan Law in exhibition with a score of 103 to 78. Junior Aislin Cohen, junior Liana Clune, sophomore Muiriel Rader, and freshman Ryan Cohen took first place in the 200 yard medley relay (2:03.88). Senior Isabel Torello crushed the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.25.  Junior Clara Matos da Cruz won the 200 individual medley (2:32.34), and Ryan Cohen took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.46.

Senior Jordyn Gould took first in the 1M diving with a score of 223.75, and Aislin Cohen won the 100 freestyle (55.48).  Sophomore Abigail Fernandez won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:52.58. Rader, Torello, Ryan Cohen, and senior Kate Young took first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:50.29. Right after the relay, Torello swam again and won the 100 backstroke (1:09.58). Aislin Cohen had the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.73) in exhibition.  Fernandez, freshman Nora Clune, Torello, and Aislin Cohen posted the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:03.76) in exhibition.

On Oct. 21, the team celebrated its seniors and defeated Lauralton Hall with a score of 83 to 71 in exhibition. The meet began with the seniors, co-captain Isabel Torello, co- captain Jordyn Gould, Kate Young, and Taylor Nowak, being introduced. Freshman Ryan Cohen, junior Liana Clune, Young, and sophomore Muiriel Rader won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:02.95. Junior Aislin Cohen took first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.02), and her sister Ryan Cohen won the 200 individual medley (2:28.37).

Torello took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.36.  Gould won the diving with a score of 264.25 and finished the regular dual meet season undefeated. Rader took first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.78), and Torello won the 100 freestyle (57.45). The meet went into exhibition after the 100 freestyle, and junior Clara Matos da Cruz posted the fastest time in the 500 freestyle (5:50.83).

The 200 freestyle relay consisting of all the seniors (Gould, Young, Nowak, and Torello) posted the fastest time of 1:50.87. Sophomore Abigail Fernandez posted the fastest time in the 100 backstroke (1:09.76), and Liana Clune had the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.51). Aislin Cohen, Torello, Matos da Cruz, and Fernandez swam the 400 freestyle relay in exhibition and posted the fastest time of 4:03.61.

Football

Guilford football traveled to West Haven on Oct. 18 and fell 39-0. Caden Hillier ran for 49 yards on 12 carries. Hillier and Jackson Hamm each had eight tackles, while Bryce Perry had nine.

The team then hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on Oct. 25 and won 35-28. Hillier recorded 265 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns. Aiden Ruotolo and Aidan Connelly had 10 tackles each.

On Nov. 1, the Grizzlies hit the road to Lyman Hall and earned a 41-0 victory. Hillier rushed for 277 yards and scored four touchdowns in the contest. Connelly recorded 17 tackles.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country team competed at the SCC Championship on Oct. 16 at East Shore Park in New Haven, with the girls finishing fourth overall. The team was led by junior Ciara Davenport, who finished 12th with a time of 20:16 and was awarded a spot on the All-SCC First Team.

Sophomore Olivia Jackson finished 30th with a time of 21:46 and was directly followed by freshman Kaylin Diglio in 31st with a time of 21:50. Rounding out the top five was sophomore Sienna Brackney in 35th with a time of 21:52, and freshman Abbigail White in 41st with a time of 22:32.

The team then competed at the Class MM State Championships on Oct. 26 at Wickham Park in Manchester, with the girls finishing sixth overall. The team was led by Davenport, who finished in 11th with a time of 21:00. Jackson finished in 16th with a time of 21:16 and was followed by Diglio in 35th with a time of 22:37. Rounding out the top five included White in 38th with a time of 22:50, and senior Agnes Batters in 46th with a time of 23:28.

Davenport and Jackson both competed in the State Open Championship on Oct. 31. Jackson finished with a time of 20:50, and Davenport finished with a time of 22:31.

Boys’ Cross Country

Guilford boys’ cross country competed in the SCC Championships at East Shore Park on Oct. 16. The team took fourth place, just missing out on third by a point behind Xavier, Hamden, and Amity. Top performers were freshman Jackson Gould who was 17th with a time of 17:23, and sophomore Lewis Thoreen in 20th with a time of 17:27. Both runners qualified for the All-SCC Second team.

Next for Guilford were sophomores Jordan Espinosa who was 28th in 17:47.3, followed by Luca Esposito-Langlais in 29th in 17:47.4, and David Zhang who was 36th in 18:05. Rounding out the top 7 for Guilford was junior Aaron Kowalonek who finished 54th in 18:33, and senior captain Enzo Taverna in 55th in 18:34.

The team then competed in the Class MM State Championships at Wickham Park on Oct. 26. Guilford finished in fifth place as a squad. Top performers were Gould who was 20th in a time of 17:31, followed by Thoreen in 17:37 in 23rd. Both performances were good enough to qualify them for the State Open.

Rounding out the top 7 for the team included Espinosa who was 40th in 18:18, followed by Zhang in 42nd in 18:24, and Esposito-Langlais in 55th in 18:42. Next was junior Gabe Grassi in 61st in 18:49, followed by Taverna in 63rd in 18:54.
