Field Hockey Wins a Trio, Cross Country Takes Third at Divisional Meet


Volleyball

The Branford volleyball team traveled to Lauralton Hall on Sept. 30 and lost 3-0. Sailor Plourde had five kills, and Stella Andresen and Lea Sekerovic had four each. Sophie Santos had 13 digs, and Riley O’Brien had 11. Julianne Henkel had 17 assists.

Two days later, the Hornets traveled to Jonathan Law and won 3-1. Henkel and Sekerovic had 12 kills each, and Plourde had 11. O’Brien had 27 digs, and Andresen had 15. Henkel also added 33 assists.

Branford hosted Cheshire on Oct. 4 and fell 3-0.

Field Hockey

The Branford field hockey team traveled to North Haven on Oct. 1 and won 8-0. Goals for the Hornets were scored by Ellie Meyran (four), Aliza Giordano (two), Adlee Guandalini, and Sydney Dahl. Assists were credited to Meyran, Jessica Radziunas, Savannah Johnson, and Skylar Dunn. Lilly Panuccio recorded seven saves, and Guiliana Barros, Hana Omeragic, and Tate Jones all had strong performances.

On Oct. 4, the team hosted Lyman Hall and won 7-0. Goals were scored by Meyran (four), Radziunas, Johnson, and Giordano. Assists were credited to Jones (two), Johnson, and Randee Chobian. Panuccio recorded zero saves. Meyran broke the freshman-season scoring record at Branford with her 21st goal, and Barros and Victoria Amarante had strong games.

The next day, the Hornets hit the road to New Canaan and won 2-1 in overtime. Giordano scored both goals for Branford, and Meyran had an assist. Panuccio had seven saves.

“Very hard fought match between two solid teams,” said Head Coach Peter Frye. “Randee Chobian, Jessica Radziunas, and Savannah Johnson were standouts.”

Cross Country

Branford cross country competed at the SCC Oronoque Division Meet on Oct. 2 at the Guilford Fairgrounds. The boys placed third as a team with 70 points.

David Regan placed third (17:10), and Sawyer Gaudreau took 12th (19:07). Cormac Fichtenholtz took 16th place (19:30), and Paul Lesyk placed 18th (19:59). Nolan Weted (21:32) finished 24th, and Supremee Shrestha (21:33) placed 25th. Vincent Gustavson (25:48) finished 36th.

The girls did not receive a team score, but Charlotte Kenney placed second (19:19.9), while Caitlyn Lentner took seventh (21:08).

“Once again, David and Charlotte led the way with very impressive times,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “Very gutsy performances from many of our runners, continuing to improve from week to week.”
