Girls’ Swimming Starts the Season Strong, Boys’ Cross Country Competes in Big Meet
Boys’ Cross Country
The Guilford boys’ cross country team competed at the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park in Rhode Island on Sept. 28. The young team was led by freshman Jackson Gould, who placed 67th in 17:50, directly followed by sophomore teammate Lewis Thoreen, who was 68th in 17:51. Junior Aaron Kowalonek was 79th in 18:03, followed by sophomore Jordan Espinosa in 99th in 18:21. Rounding out the top five for Guilford was sophomore David Zhang, who was 138th in 18:44. This was a good test for the team against really good competition in a large field.
Girls’ Swimming
At the first meet of the season on Sept. 10, the Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team defeated the co-op made up of SCA/East Haven/Cross/Hillhouse with a score of 96 to 76. Sophomore Abby Fernandez, senior Izzy Torello, freshman Ryan Cohen, and junior Aislin Cohen took first place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:59.25. Aislin Cohen came in first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:10.25), and Torello took first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:23.91).
Sophomore Muiriel Rader came in first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 27.56, and senior Jordyn Gould came in first in the one meter (1M) diving. Ryan Cohen placed first in the 100 yard freestyle (59.94), and junior Clara Matos da Cruz took first place in the 500 yard freestyle (6:03.34). Rader, Torello, senior Kate Young, and Aislin Cohen took first in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:48.28). At this point, Guilford went into exhibition, and Torello posted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.16). Cruz, Fernandez, freshman Nora Clune, and Ryan Cohen had the fastest time in the 400 yard freestyle relay (4:12.72).
On Sept. 12, Guilford took its second win of the season to Fitch High School Co-Op with a score of 98 to 83. Aislin Cohen, Torello, Young, and Ryan Cohen won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:59.25. Torello took first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:01.94), and Aislin Cohen took first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:22.03). Gould won the 1M diving with a score of 233.55.
Ryan Cohen took first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.23), and Aislin Cohen won the 100 yard freestyle (54.90). Torello came in first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:30.25, and the 200 yard freestyle relay consisting of Aislin Cohen, Young, Torello, and Ryan Cohen won with a time of 1:45.66.
On Sept. 16, Guilford lost to Amity with a score of 79 to 105. Aislin Cohen came in first for the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.01. Gould had the highest score in the 1M diving with 256.35 points, setting the Amity pool record. Aislin Cohen also took first place in the 100 yard freestyle (55.10), and her sister Ryan took first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.71). The 400 yard freestyle relay team, made up of Torello, Matos da Cruz, Ryan Cohen, and Aislin Cohen, took first place with a time of 4:00.51.
On Sept. 23, Guilford took a loss vs. Cheshire with a score of 62 to 114. Aislin Cohen won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.33, and Gould took first place in the 1M diving with a score of 254.20.
On Sept. 30, the Grizzlies beat North Haven in exhibition with a score of 90 to 84. The 200 yard medley relay took first place with Ryan Cohen, Nora Clune, sophomore Gina Dong, and Torello with a time of 2:05.93. Young won the 200 yard freestyle (2:16.40), and Ryan Cohen won the 200 yard individual medley (2:28.88). Aislin Cohen took first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.16. Gould won the diving and broke the Guilford 1M diving record with a score of 271.25. Rader took first place in the 100 yard butterfly (1:09.51), and Matos da Cruz took first in the 100 yard freestyle (59.75). Ryan Cohen won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:51.82.
The 200 yard freestyle relay consisting of Torello, Rader, junior Hannah Brown, and Ryan Cohen posted the fastest time in exhibition with a time of 1:49.14. Torello had the fastest time in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.48), and Aislin Cohen had the fastest time in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.13), both in exhibition. Continuing in exhibition, the 400 yard freestyle relay, which included Rader, sophomore Sophia Chicarilli, Matos da Cruz, and Brown had the fastest time of 4:21.67.
Football
On Sept. 27, Guilford football hosted Cheshire and lost 28-10. Caden Hillier rushed for 151 yards and one touchdown. Aidan Connelly also recorded 11 total tackles.
