Field Hockey Wins Twice, Volleyball Splits the Week


Volleyball

The Branford volleyball team hosted East Haven on Sept. 23 and won 3-0. Sophie Santos recorded nine kills, and Stella Andresen had eight aces. Julianne Henkel had 18 digs, Riley O’Brien had 11, and Santos had 10. Henkel also added 20 assists.

On Sept. 26, the team hit the road to Foran and fell 3-1. Santos had nine kills, and Andresen and Lea Sekerovic each had seven. O’Brien had 19 digs, while Henkel and Santos each had 16. Henkel also added 28 assists.

Field Hockey

The Branford field hockey team traveled to Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 24 and won 2-0. Hornets goals were scored by Randee Chobian and Ellie Meyran, and Aliza Giordano added an assist. Lilly Panuccio recorded eight saves. Jessica Radziunas, Tate Jones, Eliza Burgess, Savannah Johnson, and Victoria Amarante also had strong performances in the contest.

The team then hosted Lauralton Hall on Sept. 27 and won 5-0.

Cross Country

On Sept. 23, Branford cross country competed at the Lauralton Hall Invitational. The boys placed seventh with 211 points. In 10th place was David Regan (18:13.9), and Sawyer Gaudreau placed 37th (20:06). Paul Lesyk claimed 52nd place (21:04), while Cormac Fichtenholtz placed 59th (21:37). Supremee Shrestha finished in 66th place (22:33).

The girls did not have a team score, but Charlotte Kenney placed third (21:03), and Caitlyn Lentner placed ninth (21:47).

“This was a very good meet for everyone, big improvement across the board,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “Their dedication is paying off.”

In the Ocean State Invitational on Sept. 28, the boys finished 38th out of 53 teams. Regan finished 85th (18:36), and Lesyk came in 219th (20:59). Fichtenholtz (233rd place) finished with a time of 21:21, while Cooper Ranton came in 247th place with a time of 21:45. Shrestha placed 257th and finished in a time of 22:11.

Gaudreau placed 29th in the freshman race (15:29), and Vincent Gustavson took 80th (18:02).

On the girls’ side, Lentner placed 55th (22:24), and Kenney took second in the freshman race (16:39).

“Great experience for everyone running against tough competition,” Connell said.

Football

Branford football traveled to East Lyme on Sept. 27 and lost 17-0.
