Football Takes Loss at Home, Field Hockey Wins Two

Football

Branford football hosted Lyman Hall on Sept. 20 and fell 21-7.

Boys’ Soccer

The Branford boys’ soccer team traveled to Notre Dame-West Haven on Sept. 17 and took a 9-0 loss.

Two days later, the Hornets hosted Jonathan Law and ended in a 1-1 tie.

Girls’ Soccer

Branford girls’ soccer hit the road to Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 17 and lost 9-0.

Two days later, Branford traveled to East Haven and won 1-0.

Field Hockey

Branford field hockey opened up the week with a 5-0 home win vs. Cheshire on Sept. 17. Goals were scored by Ellie Meyran (three), Aliza Giordano, and Savannah Johnson. Assists came from Giordano and Victoria Amarante. Lilly Panuccio had four saves, and Tate Jones and Hana Omeragic were also standouts.

On Sept. 21, the team played host to Newtown and won 5-0. Hornets goals were scored by Meyran (four) and Johnson. Both Meyran and Johnson also had an assist, while Panuccio had nine saves.

“Tate Jones, Jessica Radziunas, and Randee Chobian played strong games,” said Head Coach Peter Frye. “The score was not indicative of the competitiveness of the game. Newtown is a strong team.”

Girls’ Swimming

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team traveled to Hamden on Sept. 17. Sophomore Audrina Pham won both of her events, the 200 individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:30.73, and the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:00.01.

Freshman Audrey Henkel won both of her events, with a 26.39 in the 50 freestyle and a time of 1:05.57 in the 100 backstroke. Junior Summer Sabatino won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:25.80, and she also contributed to the 200 freestyle relay team along with captain Erin Newlan and sophomores Ellie Brown and Audrina Pham. The team broke the two-minute barrier with a 1:59.98.

Cross Country

On Sept. 17, Branford boys’ and girls’ cross country traveled to Eisenhower Park to face Foran, Sheehan, Fairfield Prep, Lauralton Hall, Kaynor Tech, and Platt Tech. The boys placed fourth with 81 points. David Regan placed fourth (18.46), and Sawyer Gaudreau placed 14th (20:57). In 28th was Paul Lesyk (22.08), while Cormac Fichtenholtz placed 29th (22:20). Supremee Shrestha took 38th place (23:14).

The girls didn’t have a team score, but Caitlyn Lentner placed third, and Charlotte Kenney placed fifth (23:31).
