Cross Country Shines in Invitational Meet, Field Hockey Earns Two Wins
Cross Country
On Sept. 14, the H-K boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Attleboro, Massachusetts to compete in the Highland Park Invitational against over 25 teams from Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
The girls’ team raced well on the 3.1 mile course, overcoming the heat to place first overall as a team in the varsity race with 39 points. The girls were led by junior Grace Mitchell, who crossed the line in a time of 20:33 to place second. She was quickly followed by teammate and sophomore Charlotte Behnke, who ran 20:44 to place fourth. Next to cross the line were junior Amelia Riggs in 10th (21:41), junior Julia Downing in 14th (21:52), and senior co-captain Keira Sehl-Albert in 16th (22:20) to round out the team scoring.
The boys’ team, missing three of its top runners, also had a strong race but did not score as a team with only four varsity runners. The squad was led by senior co-captain Jack Cozean, who placed eighth in the race with a time of 16:52. Following him were junior Alex Frederickson in 16th (17:51), sophomore Evan Berardino in 21st (18:02), and junior Anthony Frederickson in 24th (18:08).
On Sept. 21, the teams traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire to compete in the Manchester Invitational against over 80 teams from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut .
The girls’ team once again had a great day on the hilly 3.1 mile course to place first overall as a team in the small schools varsity race with 82 points. The girls were led by Behnke, who crossed the line in a time of 21:14 to place 12th in the race. She was followed by Mitchell, who ran 21:27 to place 16th. Next to cross the line was Downing in 28th (22:05), Sehl-Albert in 30th (22:06), and Riggs in 33rd (22:09) to round out the team scoring.
The boys’ team, missing one of their top runners, also had a solid race, as they placed fourth out of 41 teams in their race, scoring 178 points. They were led by Cozean, who placed 19th in the race with a time of 17:28. Following him was Alex Frederickson in 31st (17:53), Berardino in 42nd (18:16), Anthony Frederickson in 49th (18:27), and junior Cash Smigel in 52nd (18:30).
Boys’ Soccer
H-K boys’ soccer hosted Cromwell on Sept. 16 and won 3-1.
On Sept. 19, the Cougars hosted East Hampton and took a 1-0 loss.
Girls’ Soccer
On Sept. 17, H-K girls’ soccer hit the road to Cromwell and took a 4-2 loss.
Three days later, the team traveled to East Hampton and lost 3-0.
Field Hockey
H-K field hockey hosted Old Saybrook on Sept. 17 and tied 1-1.
On Sept. 19, the team traveled to Windsor and won 3-2.
The next day, the Cougars hosted Valley Regional and won 4-1.
Volleyball
The H-K volleyball team hit the road to Coginchaug on Sept. 16 and won 3-0.
Two days later, H-K hosted Old Lyme and blanked the opponent 3-0.
On Sept. 20, the Cougars concluded the week at Portland and won 3-0.
