Cross Country Dominates Invitational, Football Falls in Season Opener

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

North Haven girls’ swimming and diving had its first meet of the season on Sept. 10, traveling to Shelton and recording a 91-77 win. In the 200 medley relay, Giada Garofalo, Cosma Gregg, Kelsey Perkins, and Amelia Bautz took second place (2:16.19). Kalli Wan, Angelina Valentino, Abigail Lorusso, and Tessa Boisseau placed third (2:31.32).

In the 200 meter freestyle, Andrea Laborde claimed third place (2:37.57), Avery Cullen placed fourth (2:41.20), and Scarlett Russek took fifth (2:46.79). In the 200 individual medley, Perkins finished in second place (2:46.70), while Bautz took third (2:57.18). Wan recorded a fifth place finish (3:26.06).

Garofalo placed second in the 50 freestyle (27.63), and Valentino took third (31.91). Abigail Ray placed fifth in that event (33.47). In the 100 butterfly, Perkins raced to second place (1:16.32), and Bautz took fourth (1:26.72). In the 100 freestyle, Gregg placed second (1:09.90), Lorusso placed third (1:10.98), and Ray took fourth (1:16.50).

Laborde competed in the 500 freestyle and placed first with a time of 7:15.18, and Cullen placed second in that event with a time of 7:18.89. In the 200 relay, Gregg, Valentino, Russek, and Laborde placed second with a time of 2:09.47. Boisseau, Else Roosevelt, Ray, and Cullen (2:13.68) followed in third place.

Garofalo won the backstroke (1:10.14), and Lorusso placed second (1:25.64). Wan took third place in the event (1:28.10). In the breaststroke, Cosma placed second (1:31.66), and Valentino placed third (1:33.24). Russek recorded a fourth place finish (1:39.58). The 400 relay team of Garofalo, Bautz, Perkins, and Laborde won the race with a time of 4:34.96. Boisseau, Ray, Lorusso, and Cullen placed third with a time of 5:00.29.

Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the Neubauer Invitational on Sept. 6. The girls’ team took first place with 62 points, while the boys placed fourth with 102 points.

On the girls’ side, Kendall Montabana placed seventh with a time of 20:08.90. Amalia Morizio placed 12th (20:48.80), and Daniella Rapuano took 17th (21:25.40). Grace DeNardis claimed 22nd place with a time of 21:57.60, while Emma Pincince placed 24th (22:10.80). Sophia Vollono (25:34.50) and Brenna Wilson (25:36.30) placed 44th and 45th, respectively.

For the boys, Matthew DeNardis finished in third place (15:13.00). Dimtry Komanetsky took 11th (16:56.80), and Diego Hoyos placed 26th (18:15.30). Logan Ohanyan raced to 32nd place (18:44.60), and Marco Maturo (18:50.20) took 34th. Michael Martinez grabbed 41st place with a time of 19:42.10, and Jaiden Walton took 45th (19:59.10).

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven boys’ soccer traveled to Notre Dame-West Haven on Sept. 10 and fell 8-0.

On Sept. 12, the Nighthawks hit the road to East Haven and bounced back with a 2-0 win. Goals for the Nighthawks were scored by Jett Rosekopf assisted by captain Kevin Parker, and Nick Gaetano assisted by captain Jack Notaro.

Two days later, North Haven wrapped up the week vs. St. Paul Catholic and earned a 4-3 victory. Gaetano recorded a goal and an assist, and Notaro also scored. Joey Solimene had a brilliant goal assisted by Notaro, and Russell Collins closed out the scoring with the game-winner. Josh Stefanik, Hayden Minns, and Aiden Oliveria all had standout performances.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer team traveled to Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 10 and finished with a 1-1 tie.

Two days later, the squad traveled to Lyman Hall and won 2-1.

Field Hockey

On Sept. 10, North Haven field hockey hosted Amity and took a 2-0 loss.

Then, on Sept. 12, North Haven traveled to Hamden and fell 7-0.

Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted Immaculate and took a 6-1 loss.

Volleyball

North Haven volleyball began the week at Jonathan Law on Sept. 9 and won 3-1. Alyssa DiGiovanna and Lucia Cavaliere had six kills each, and Grace Alfano had four. Cavaliere also recorded seven aces. Bianca Watts had three blocks, while Alyssa Ferriouolo had 11 digs. Danielle Dixon added 11 assists.

On Sept. 13, the team traveled to Lauralton Hall and lost 3-0. Ferriouolo and Cavaliere had 10 digs each, and Dixon had seven assists.

Football

North Haven football hosted St. Joseph for the first game of the season on Sept. 13 and fell 17-7. Joey Mastroianni went 79 yards to the house for a Nighthawks touchdown.
