Cross Country Competes in Big Invitational, Football Wins Season Opener

Cross Country

The Hand boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Neubauer Invitational on Sept. 6. The girls placed fourth as a team with 86 points.

On the girls’ side, Annecy Vlieks won the race with a time of 17:31.10. Geneva Zucconi claimed 15th place (21:24.70), and Marla Lafferty took 21st (21:55.30). Evelyn Lavigne placed 29th with a time of 23:03.30, and Natalie Greenup took 40th (25:00.50). Charlotte Leonte placed 46th (25:38.20), and Lily Leonte finished in 53rd (26:22.20).

Football

Hand football opened the season vs. New London on Sept. 13 and won 36-14. Paul Calandrelli threw for 124 yards and ran for 49. He also scored one rushing touchdown, and Tyler Narracci scored two. Quinton O’Dea had two receiving touchdowns.

Boys’ Soccer

Hand boys’ soccer hosted Sheehan on Sept. 10 and won 5-0.

The team then traveled to Wilbur Cross on Sept. 12 and won 2-1.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team hosted Career/Hillhouse on Sept. 9 and earned a 9-0 win. Goals were scored by Keely Parri (three), Jess McCartney (three), Lola Pellegrino (one), Alice Agovino (one), and Taylor Kee (one). Assists came from Agovino (one), Pellegrino (two), Piper Lea (one), Finnley Parri (one), Madison Shang (one), Molly McGetrick (one), Isabelle Wilker (one), and Kee (one). Tatum Cash recorded two saves in goal.

Three days later, the Tigers hosted Cheshire and blanked the opponent 3-0. Schang scored a goal (assisted by Claire Levis), Pellegrino added one (assisted by Agovino), and Lea knocked one in (assisted by Liza Jobson). Cash had eight saves.

Field Hockey

Hand field hockey traveled to Lyman Hall on Sept. 10 and won 7-1.

The next day, the Tigers hosted Guilford and won 2-1.

Volleyball

The Hand volleyball team played host to Amity on Sept. 9 and fell 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 10-25). Highlights included Camryn McParland (senior, outside hitter) with 14 digs, one ace, and Julia Gallo (senior, libero) with 10 digs, two aces.

On Sept. 13, the Tigers hosted East Haven and won 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 16-14). Grace Hall (senior, captain, setter) had 21 assists, two aces. Alexis Kuszpa (senior, captain, right side hitter) recorded nine kills, two blocks. McParland had 12 kills, 15 digs, and Gallo had three aces, 34 digs. Margeaux Langille (senior, outside hitter) recorded nine kills, 15 digs, one block.

Junior Ava Bonalsky (middle hitter) showed great mental toughness, as she served the last three points of the match, including an ace to give Hand the lead 15-14. Bonalsky also featured two kills and two blocks during the match.
