Deep River Horseshoe League in Crunch Time as Competition Amps Up
The cloud cover provided the players some relief from the hot sun, but the humidity remained throughout the evening. After Week 13 of the Deep River Horseshoe League, only four games are left before the league playoffs begin, featuring the top eight teams.
The Braves and Mets swept, distancing their teams from the pack. Cubs’ Jeremy Davis had a personal best scoring night and was the first "B" division player to be the top scorer for the week. The Pirates topped 300 points for the third week in a row and fifth time this season.
Bob Cifaldi's Mets and Tony Cutone's Angels were coming off of big wins from Week 12. The teams were statistically equal, with the edge going to the Angels’ "B" player Ted Dubay to be the difference. Mets’ Keith Toohey (Westbrook) was the top scorer in game one for their first win. The Mets were able to take the lead early in the next two games and go on for the wins. In game four, Toohey had a season best 29 point game to lead the Mets to a win by 18 points. The Angels, who have been struggling to score throughout the match, had their best chance for a win in game five. With the score tied going into the last box, the Mets outscored the Angels 5-4 to earn a one point win. Toohey had a personal best night, scoring 91 points and 19 ringers. The Mets swept the Angels.
The Braves would be fighting an uphill battle to hold onto first place, as they faced the Rockies, who had the benefit of the handicap in all six games. In three of the games, the Rockies, using the handicap, took the games down to the last box, losing one game by three points and the other two by one point. Braves’ Mike Zanelli Jr. and Rockies’ Mike Didomozio were locked into a good head-to-head match. They each won two games, but Didomizio won the scoring duel 126-120, and his 126 points were the second highest "A" player score. The Braves swept the Rockies and maintained their 1-1/2 game lead over the Mets.
The Cubs were without Tanner Steeves, so the odds favored the Rangers. After winning game one, the Rangers could feel the odds shifting to the Cubs in game two, as Davis (Chester) and Cody Layton both tossed ringers in the last box to give them a tie. It was Davis who singlehandedly won game three. He went on a scoring rampage in game five, scoring 43 points, 10 ringers, one double, leading the Cubs to a 23 point win.
Davis didn't think he could top it, but he did with 44 points, 13 ringers, and five doubles. He was the top scorer for the night with 148 points, 39 ringers, and eight doubles. It was the first time a "B" player was the top scorer for the week. He is now the league leader for "B" division players in five of six statistical categories. His 87 points scored in two games is a record.
Cardinals’ Kris Toohey and Diamondbacks’ Chip Goodrich were locked in a tight head-to-head match. After three games, they each had 91 points, but Toohey pulled away, scoring 136 points for the night and was the top "A" division scorer. The Diamondbacks reeled off four-straight wins, before the Cardinals would win their lone game.
Cardinals’ Kris Casey's 99 point series was his season best. The difference in the match was Frank Durinick, who subbed for Diamondbacks’ Brian Walsh. His 111 point series was the top "C" player score and propelled the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win with 311 points. They were the tenth team to top 300 points this season. The Diamondbacks only managed to toss one double, and it was Durinick in the last game and the last box - which was a fitting way to end the evening.
The Yankees were looking to hang onto a playoff spot, as they faced the high scoring Pirates. They got off to a slow start, losing the first two games. Yankees’ Damin Roberts singlehandedly won game three with his second game, where he tossed over 30 points. Roberts, who is a "B" player, ended the night with a season best 130 point series and was the week's third leading scorer and the second leading "B" division scorer.
Pirates’ Harvey Strausser's 103 point series was the second leading "C" scorer. The Pirates scored 310 points, the third week in a row topping 300 and fifth time this season. The Pirates won 4-2.
In Red Sox vs. Tigers, Pete Perkins subbed for Red Sox’s Bill Beckwith, and the Tigers were without Andy Turshen. Red Sox’s Scott Allen Jr. (Deep River) had a season best night with a 123 point series and a personal best game of 45 points, 12 ringers, two doubles. He was the "B" division’s third leading scorer. Tigers’ Anthony Conkling (Marlborough) finally achieved a goal - to hit the century mark. He ended the night with a 109 point series, and the Red Sox won 4-2.
In other games, the Orioles failed to gain any ground, as they split with the Giants and remained in third place. Giants’ Paul Chrystal had a season best 88 point series. The Reds used handicap to their advantage, as they won 4-2 over the White Sox. Reds’ Pudge Goodrich's 125 point series was the third highest for "A" players. The Dodgers and Marlins split.
