Muhammad jumped 6”4’ at the meet, which was held at Amity Regional High School on May 21. He also finished sixth in the triple jump and accounted for all of Branford’s team scoring at the meet. The Hornets finished in 15th place as a squad.

Also during the meet, the team’s 4x800 relay team finished with a time of 8:46.43 - the team’s best of the season - to qualify for the Class MM State Championship meet on Tuesday, May 28 in New Britain. The relay team consists of seniors Noah Hauswirth, Ryan Andrus, and juniors David Regan, and Nolan Weted.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Branford girls’ outdoor track team competed at the SCC Championship at Amity on May 21. The Hornets finished fifth with 50 total points.

Lucy Moran earned First Team All-SCC honors in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.76. Moran also earned a spot on the All-SCC Second Team in the 1600, when she placed second with a time of 4:57.80. Joelle Budz set a new school record in the 300 hurdles, taking second with a time of 45.65. Zayna Cella took third in the javelin (92’6”), and Avery Clouse took fourth in the high jump (4’10”). Ella Stone earned a fifth place finish in the long jump (16’10”), while Budz (26.80) earned a fifth place finish in the 200 (26.80).

The 4x400 relay team, comprised of Budz, Djamilla Toukour, Cheyenne Wilson, and Moran, took sixth place with a time of 4:17.43. The 4x100 team recorded a time of 51.71 and took eighth place. This team consisted of ZuZu Pont Strong, Toukour, Wilson, and Glorianna Buckley. Cella earned an eighth place finish in the discus (82’2”).

“Lucy Moran and Joelle Budz had outstanding meets; Lucy really battled in the 1600 (four girls finished under five minutes) and came back strong to win the 800,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “Joelle really came out blazing in the 300 hurdles. She couldn't have run a more perfect race, which resulted in a school record. Zayna Cella is a freshman, and she gave us points we didn't anticipate earlier in the season. She has burst onto the scene and filled the void we have had the past few seasons. She still has a lot to learn and is eager to become a better thrower. This was a great team effort today. We got contributions from all areas. I remain very proud of the work and accomplishments of this group.”
