The Guilford golf team hosted Branford and Morgan on May 20, clinching two more victories with a total score of 155, Branford shooting 160, and Morgan 192. Medalist honors were earned by Andrew Beauton with a 37, followed by Kelley Webster (38), Anthony Cerino (39), and Daniel Pearce (41).
The next day, the team traveled to Notre Dame-West Haven and won a close match, 152-155. Beauton was medalist with a 35, followed by Webster (37), and Pearce and Lucca Rivera-Vasquez each with 40.
Baseball
The Guilford baseball team hosted North Haven in the opening round of the SCC Tournament on May 20 and fell 6-4. The Grizzlies got off to a fast start in the game, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Nighthawks. Lucas Ametrano and Mike Buccaro began the inning with back-to-back singles, then Lucas Deshefy doubled deep into the right-center gap to score Ametrano. An overthrow to the plate then allowed Buccaro to score, while Deshefy advanced to third base. Colin Pompano followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Deshefy for Guilford's third run.
Bryce Meder was Guilford's starting pitcher, and he held North Haven scoreless through the first three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six batters. The Nighthawks finally broke through in the fourth inning, when a run scored on a double play to make it 3-1 Grizzlies. Meder also contributed to the game offensively, as he singled home Buccaro for Guilford’s fourth run of the contest.
Additionally, the All-SCC athletes were recently announced. Meder and Ametrano earned First Team honors. Grizzlies that were named to the Second Team were Buccaro, Pompano, and Deshefy.
Softball
Guilford softball traveled to Sheehan on May 20 for the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament and took a narrow 2-1 loss. Kennadie Tansey went 1-for-3 and drove in a run, and Sarah O’Brien and Ella Munson each recorded a hit. Sophia Meade pitched six innings, giving up five hits and just one earned run. She struck out 12 batters.
Meade and Addie Smith earned First Team All-SCC honors for their efforts this spring, and Munson earned a spot on the Second Team.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On May 21, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team competed at the SCC Championships at Amity and placed eighth out of 19 teams with 40 total points.
Andres Gutierrez won the 300 meter hurdles with a school record-setting time of 38.22. James Oberg won the shot put with a throw of 52'3 and took sixth in the discus with a throw of 135'1. The 4x400 relay team (Max Freeman, Stephano Jarin, Gutierrez, and Ethan Wienkamp) took second place with a time of 3:27.15, and Gutierrez overtook three teams in the anchor position with a 400 split of 48.8.
The 4x800 team of Alex Milano, Enzo Taverna, Alex Hansen, and Coleman Love placed sixth with a season-best time of 8:19.02. Hansen took sixth in the 1600 with a time of 4:34.07, and Wienkamp took sixth in the javelin with a throw of 152'3.
Several Guilford athletes were additionally named to the All-SCC Team for their efforts on the track this spring. Gutierrez and Oberg were named to the First Team, while Freeman, Wienkamp, and Jarin were all named to the Second Team.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The All-SCC athletes for boys’ lacrosse were recently announced. Guilford’s Tyler Hilgert was named to the Tier 1 First Team, while Matt Konareski and Jacob Corso were placed on the Tier 1 Second Team.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Payton Root (attack) and Tea Gambardella (midfield) earned Spots on the SCC All-Conference First Team for Guilford girls’ lacrosse this spring.
Girls’ Tennis
Several Guilford girls’ tennis players earned spots on the SCC All-Conference Team this spring. Kallie Kagan was named to the First Team for singles, while Caroline Hergan was named a Second Team singles player.
For doubles, Peyton Lynch and Mia Hardy earned First Team honors.
Boys’ Tennis
Tomas Kharabadze was named to the All-SCC Second Team as a singles player for Guilford boys’ tennis. Logan Wertheim and Hunter Lewis were named Second Team doubles players.
