Girls’ Outdoor Track Continues to Shine, Baseball Wins a Pair

Golf

On April 15, Guilford golf traveled to Alling Memorial Golf Club to take on East Haven in the first match of season winning with a score of 158-197. The medalist for the match was Guilford’s captain, Andrew Beauton. He shot a 1-under-par 35, followed by Daniel Pearce (39), and a pair of 42s from Anthony Cerino and Kelley Webster.

On April 17, the team hosted Daniel Hand at Madison Country Club and claimed a 171-183 victory. Beauton was the medalist with a score of 39, followed by Pearce (40), Webster (45), and Cerino (47).

On April 22, the Grizzlies traveled to Race Brook Country Club to take on Amity and incurred their first loss of the season, 159-153. Beauton and Pearce both scored a 39, Webster shot a 40, and Lucca Rivera-Vazquez contributed with a 41.

On April 23, Guilford was hosted by Branford at Pine Orchard Country Club and claimed a win, 161-175. Beauton earned medalist honors with a 37, followed by Cerino (40), Webster (40), and Pearce (44).

On April 24, Guilford defeated Cheshire in a tight match 162-166 at home at Madison Country Club. Medalist honors were shared by Beauton and Pearce, both with a 37. They were followed by Cerino and Webster, both carding a 44.

On April 29, Guilford suffered its second loss of the campaign to Xavier at home, 171-155. Guilford’s score of 171 consisted of a 37 from Beauton, Webster with a 39, Pearce with a 45, and Rivera-Vazquez with a 50.

On April 30, Guilford took on Shelton at Bronson Country Club, earning another win 158-162. Beauton fired a 35, followed by Webster (40), Cerino (41), and Pearce (42).

On May 1, Hamden came to visit Guilford. Guilford’s best team score of the season of 150 easily defeated Hamden at 197. Co-medalists for the contest were Beauton and Pearce firing a score of 36, followed by Webster (38), and Cerino (40).

On May 9, Guilford traveled to The Farms Country Club to take on Cheshire in a close win of 162-165. Beauton was the medalist with a score of 37, followed by Cerino (40), Rivera-Vazquez (42), and Webster (43).

On May 13, Guilford took down Morgan 179-163 while visiting Clinton Country Club. Pearce earned medalist laurels while shooting a 39. Webster shot a 40, and Cerino and Rivera-Vazquez both shot a 42.

On May 14, Guilford rolled to another victory, defeating home host East Haven at Alling Memorial, 154-192. Beauton was the medalist, firing a 3-under-par 33, followed by Cerino (37). Webster and Pearce both scored a 42.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team traveled to Fairfield Prep on May 13 and fell 10-3. Matt DiNardo had an RBI single in the second inning, Mike Buccaro recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning, and Lucas Ametrano added a solo homer in the seventh. On the mound, Brandon Rosa pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

The team then hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on May 17 and won 2-0. Rosa tossed six shutout innings and allowed just four hits while earning his third win of the year. Guilford scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lucas Deshefy and Colin Pompano began the inning with back-to-back singles before moving up to second and third base on an infield ground-out. DiNardo scored Deshefy on a sacrifice fly, and Pompano scored on a wild pitch. Deshefy had two hits in the game, and Buccaro had a double.

The next day, the Grizzlies played host to Cheshire and earned a 5-2 victory. The win set the Grizzlies record at 14-6 for the season and secured them first place in the SCC Quinnipiac Division. It is the team's third consecutive winning season under Head Coach Nick Merullo.

Adam Copeland started on the mound and tossed three high-quality innings, with the Rams scratching out one run on just two hits in their three turns at bat. Cade Rinehart came in to relieve Copeland in the top of the fourth and ended up earning the win. He allowed just one unearned run without allowing a Cheshire hit through his three innings of work. Tanner Smith took the mound in the top of the seventh and picked up a save by getting the final three outs without allowing a run.

Softball

On May 13, the Guilford softball team played host to Amity and lost 4-3. Katherine Eaton and Adrianna Piascik drove in a run each, and Piascik and Addie Smith each recorded two hits. On the mound, Sophia Meade pitched eight innings. She gave up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 batters.

The team then hosted Waterford on May 18 and fell 2-1. Ella Munson drove in the Grizzlies lone run, and Smith recorded a hit. Meade pitched three innings and and gave up two runs. She also struck out seven batters.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team competed at the SCC East Sectional meet on May 13. The day started off well, with the 4x800 meter relay team (Olivia Jackson, Clara Gahm, Sienna Brackney, and Ciara Davenport) taking second in 10:05.83. Senior co-captain Gahm came back to take second place in the 800 in 2:22.20 and sixth in the 3200 in 11:52.94. Also scoring and placing in the 800 were freshman Jackson (fifth in 2:32.55) and freshman Brackney (seventh in 2:36.38). Jackson also placed in the 3200 in 12:22.36. In the 1600, sophomore Davenport was fifth in 5:44.24, and Brackney was seventh in 5:49.14. In the 400, junior Daniella Selig took fifth place in 63.81, while junior Ella Heckler was second in the 200 in 28.02.

In the field events, junior Cassie Ward took fourth with a season's best jump of 4'10," with fellow junior Lily Sullivan tied for seventh with a jump of 4'6". Sophomore Anna Hastings threw her personal best in the discus (89'9") to take fourth place. Closing out the day was the 4x400 relay team (Paige Ponzio, Selig, Hannalore Koumpouras, and Heckler) who got second in 4:17.06.
