The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team has locked up the No. 1 seed on the shoreline. The boys posted three key wins vs. H-K, Morgan, and Cromwell.
In the game vs. Morgan, the Rams paid tribute to their nine seniors: captains Brayden Cody, Will Masselli, and Aiden D'Anna, as well as Ngwang Choegyal, Brenden Hagelston, Holden LeMire, Lucas Webb, Jacob DeAngelo, and Patty Sheahan. Under the lights, the Rams played aggressively and jumped out to an unassailable lead, beating the Huskies 23-6. Wes Percival went an amazing 9-0 facing off for Old Saybrook, while Grey Richards went 9-3, Brandon Hestor went 3-0, and Ethan Lane went 4-2.
D'Anna led the Rams in scoring with five goals, Cody and Percival chipped in four each, Brendan Cassella had three, Jamison LeMire had two, and DeAngelo, freshman Keegan Dobratz, Hester, Liam Roberts, and Webb each had one goal. Goalie Cole Lawson had nine saves, while freshman goalie Jonathan Craparo looked good in the second half.
Additionally, the game against Morgan served as a Lax4Life game, raising awareness for suicide prevention.
The very next day, Old Saybrook’s bus pointed towards Cromwell, where the Rams kept their streak going and won by a score of 19.4. Overall, the Rams won 69% of the faceoffs and out-groundballed the Panthers 47-25, despite racking up 20 penalties.
Junior Roberts led the Rams with five goals and two assists. Cassella and Cody each scored four goals and had one assist each. D'Anna had two goals, and Choegyal, Maselli, Percival (three assists), and Jamison LeMire each had one goal. Lawson had three saves, and Craparo had five saves.
“This team is very special,” said Head Coach Jon Mason. “We're playing some amazing lacrosse based on the trust each of us has in the other. This trust has elevated us from just one win all 2021 season to lead the conference. I am incredibly proud of the maturity these boys have shown, the individual growth in skill, and the support from the community. Lacrosse in Old Saybrook is back.”
Girls’ Lacrosse
Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse hosted Cromwell on May 14 and won 16-4. The Rams scored early and never lost their edge. The starting players at the draw of Ayla D’Anna, Amelia Sigersmith, and Kendall Dobratz dominated. Sigersmith and Dobratz on the circle retrieved six each for 12 draws total. D’Anna was the high scorer with six goals and four assists. Lila Cadley was in second place with five goals, and Dobratz scored three. Claire Cassella had two goals, and Amelia Sigersmith and Ainsley Sigersmith had two assists each.
On defense, goalie Erin Fiorelli played the entire game for the Rams and, given that there was little action at her end of the field, registered two saves vs. six shots on the goal in total.
The next day, the team hosted Valley Regional and earned a big 16-7 win to conclude the regular season. Senior captain Amelia Sigersmith was honored on Senior Day for her commitment and contributions to her squad.
On attack, D’Anna scored seven goals and assisted on four. This gave D’Anna her 100th career goal. Cadley had two goals and an assist, Ainsley Sigersmith had one goal and one assist, and Cassella had one goal. Amelia Sigersmith had two assists, while defense leader and co-captain Grace Desmond had one assist. In the goal, Cali Morelli had seven saves vs. seven shots for a save rate of 50%.
