Baseball Wins Twice, Outdoor Track Stays on Top
Baseball
The H-K baseball team hosted Middletown on May 13 and won 1-0. Matt Shea pitched a complete game no-hitter and struck out eight batters. H-K scored in the seventh inning, when Luke Mauri tripled to start the inning and with one out, Garrett Mitchell singled to center for the walk-off win.
On May 17, the team hosted Ellington and won 11-5. Todd Butler pitched four innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and allowing only two hits. Mauri had three hits that included two home runs, a double, and seven RBI. Joe Salafia added a big two-run double in the sixth inning.
Golf
On May 13, H-K golf hosted North Branford and won 180-209. Cam Moore was the medalist and scored a 43, Owen Staskelunas earned a 44, Declan Kessler recorded a 46, and Axel Kolcio tallied a 47.
Outdoor Track
On May 14, the H-K boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted their final tri-meet of the season as they competed against Cromwell and Old Saybrook. The boys’ team defeated Old Saybrook by a score of 128-15 and Cromwell by a score of 106-43 to finish the dual meet season undefeated with a record of 10-0. Since 2007, the H-K boys’ spring track team has amassed a dual meet record of 141 wins and only seven losses...a 95% winning percentage.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Dan McCourt in the 3200 meters (10:08), Eli Hamann-Shay in the 100 (11.3), 200 (22.9), and 400 (50.6), Ryan Ruggerio in the 110 hurdles (18.1), 300 hurdles (45.2), and pole vault (10'6"), Luke Staskelunas in the long jump (18'7"), Trevor Dixon in the shot put (45'2"), Mitchell Kelsey in the discus (127'0"), Tim Cavrell in the javelin (149'2"), and Ryan Rafferty in the triple jump (39'5"). The boys also won the 4x400 relay.
The H-K girls’ team went 2-0 on the day, as they defeated Cromwell by a score of 124-25 and beat Old Saybrook by a score of 77.5-71.5 to finish the dual meet season with a record of 9-1. The girls’ team has a combined record of 105-10 in dual meets since 2012.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (12.7), 200 (26.4), and 400 (60.8), Sydney Adelberg in the 1600 (5:35), and 800 (2:28), Charlotte Behnke in the 3200 (13:09), Delaney Aronson in the 300 hurdles (51.2), Margaret Robinson in the javelin (81'), Kayla Rodriguez in the pole vault (8'6"), and Adrianna Garopollo in the long jump (15'5"). The girls’ 4x800 relay team was also victorious on the afternoon to contribute team points.
Boys’ Tennis
H-K boys’ tennis hosted Valley Regional on May 13 and took a 4-3 loss. Bryce Leiberman earned a No. 1 singles victory (6-2, 6-4). At No. 2 singles, Eddie White won 6-3, 5-7. Joe Wessinger rounded out the victories for the Cougars with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
The team then hosted Windsor Locks on May 14 and won 7-0. White won at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1). Leiberman competed at No. 2 singles and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win. At third singles, Wessinger won 6-2, 6-1. Chase Smalley won by forfeit at fourth singles.
On the doubles side, Ezekiel Stevens and Saige Merwin won by forfeit at No. 1. Adam Livingston and Luke Frohlich competed at No. 2 doubles and 6-0, 6-4. Larson McLaughlin and Joseph Lucero finished off the sweep with a win by forfeit at third doubles.
