Girls’ Tennis Wins Two, Baseball Earns Two Victories
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On May 7, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team traveled to Amity and took a 97-52 loss. Andres Gutierrez won the 400 meter race with a time of 49.84 seconds, took second in the 100 dash with a time of 11.38, and took third in the 200 with a time of 23.67.
Sophomore Wesley Tandler won the discus with a throw of 128'0 and came in fourth in the shot put with a throw of 37'3.5. James Oberg won the shot put with a throw of 49'10. Timmy Hastings took second place in the shot put with a throw of 41'4 and claimed second in the discus with a throw of 126'1.
Cooper Woods won the 3200 with a time of 10:54.87, while Ethan Wienkamp came in second in the javelin with a throw of 136'10 and third in the long jump with a jump of 18'4.25. Ben Glascoff took second in the long jump with a jump of 19'4.5 and fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 36'8.
Max Freeman took second in the 400 with a time of 52.8, and Alex Hansen earned second place in the 800 with a time of 2:05.58. Aiden Soper took second in the triple jump with a jump of 38'7. Mackinley Cho took third in the 800 with a time of 2:09.84, while Josh Daniels finished in third in the high jump with a jump of 5'4.
Freshman Luca Esposito-Langlais punched his ticket to the SCC East Sectional Championship, taking fifth against Amity with a time of 4:58.94. Maddox Formica came in second in the 3200 with a time of 12:45.81, and Caleb Hansen earned a third place finish in the 3200 with a time of 13:10.0.
Baseball
Guilford baseball hosted Jonathan Law on May 6 and took an 11-3 loss. The offense was held to just four hits on the day. Lucas Ametrano had a triple, and Mike Buccaro added a double. Alex Tafro's RBI single in the second inning tied the game at 2-2.
The team then traveled to Amity the next day and recorded a 7-5 victory over one of the SCC’s top teams. Both teams came out swinging in the first two innings, scoring five runs apiece as the game was knotted-up heading into the third inning. Guilford scored three runs in the top of the first inning on an Adam Copeland bases-loaded double.
In the top of the second, the team added two more runs on RBI singles by captains Bryce Meder and Buccaro that gave the Grizzlies a 5-3 lead. Matt DiNardo also delivered a two-out single in the top of the third inning and eventually came around to score, and Colin Pompano recorded an RBI single to give Guilford an insurance run.
Freshman Cade Rinehart came in to pitch in relief in the third inning and shut down the Spartans over the next three. He held them to zero runs on three scattered singles, and he recorded two big strikeouts to end the fourth and fifth innings with runners in scoring position. He earned the win on the mound for his efforts. Meder took the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning and pitched two no-hit, no-run innings, striking out three Amity batters to earn the save.
On May 11, the Grizzlies traveled to West Haven and recorded a 10-1 victory. For the second consecutive game, it was Rinehart who shined on the mound. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing zero earned runs on just three hits, before Tanner Smith and Tafro combined for a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief to wrap up the win.
In the game, Lucas Deshefy had three RBI, while Buccaro and Copeland both had two RBI. Ametrano, Pompano, and Tafro all recorded two hits apiece, including a double each for Ametrano and Pompano.
Guilford will celebrate its Senior Day on Wednesday, May 15, when the team takes on Cheshire at 4 p.m.
Girls’ Tennis
On May 6, the Guilford girls’ tennis team traveled to Amity and took a 4-3 loss.
The team then hosted Cheshire on May 7 and won 6-1.
The Grizzlies closed out the week at Lauralton Hall on May 10, and they earned a 5-0 victory. All four singles players earned victories, including Kallie Kagan at No. 1 (6-1, 6-0), Caroline Hergan at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1), Molly Peterson in the third spot (6-0, 6-0), and Zoe Tsoukanelis at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2).
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Mia Hardy and Peyton Lynch earned a 6-3, 6-1 win. The second and third doubles matches did not finish.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Guilford girls’ outdoor track lost a dual meet to Amity on May 7 by a score of 104-46. Top performers included junior Ava Seseske, who won the 100 high hurdles in 18.72. Freshman Olivia Jackson won the 1600 meters in 5:45.99, followed by fellow freshmen Indy Pelliccio (5:46.27), and Sienna Brackney (5:48.86). Sophomore Paige Ponzio won the 400 in 64.55, with junior Ella Heckler taking third in 66.76.
Senior Clara Gahm won the 800 in 2:26.02, followed by sophomore Ciara Davenport in 2:29.37. Sophomore Anna Hastings was second in the discus with a throw of 78'8”. Junior Cassie Ward took third in the high jump with a state qualifying jump of 4'8”, and sophomore Camila Ward claimed third in the triple jump (28'6.6”). The 4x400 relay team won in a season's best time of 4:14.94, led by Gahm, Ponzio, Dani Selig, and Heckler.
On May 11, the team competed at East Hartford High School at the Greater Hartford Invitational. Top performers of the day included the 4x800 relay team, which took fourth overall in 9:52.34. The team was led by a strong leg from Gahm (2:19), as well as Jackson, Brackney, and Davenport. Also placing on the day was Heckler, who was sixth overall in the 200 in 27.75.
