On April 25, Branford golf hosted Daniel Hand and won 171-176. Joseph Robinson and Antonio Esperti were medalists for the match, as they both scored a 39.

Girls’ Tennis

On May 2, the Branford girls’ tennis team traveled to Guilford and took a 6-1 loss. Peyton Gaudreau earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Branford boys’ outdoor track team split another home track meet last week, losing to North Haven and edging West Haven on May 1. The Hornets, now 5-3, were paced once again by senior Enaji Muhammad who continues to shine in the jumping events.

Muhammad, a co-captain, won the high jump (6’6”) and the triple jump (39’1”) while placing second in the long jump (19’4”). Other notable performances included senior Noah Hauswirth, who finished second in the 3200 meters (10:45) and junior Nolan Weted, who finished second in the 800 meters (2:11).

In addition, sophomore Justin Cast qualified for the Class MM State Championship meet in the 200 meters with a time of 24.12. He had previously qualified in the 100 meters.

“This has been a season of ups and downs,” Head Coach Bing Miller said. “We’ve had some memorable individual performances, like Enaji in the jumps and state-qualifying performances from guys like Justin Cast, but we have also struggled to stay healthy across the board and stay consistent.”

Miller said he was pleased that most of the athletes on the team continue to show improvement, as evidenced by reaching new personal bests each meet. The team also has several underclassmen in the weight events - shot put, discus, and javelin - who show some promise.

“We have one more regular season meet, and then we head to the SCC sectionals, where we are going to need many of these guys to step up and perform,” Miller said.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 1, Branford girls’ outdoor track hosted a tri-meet with North Haven and West Haven. The team topped West Haven 66-65 and defeated North Haven 90-51. Joelle Budz won the 100 meters with a time of 12.62. She also won the 200 (26.13). Glorianna Buckley placed first in the 400 (64.66), and Violet Marrandino placed first in the 800 (2:31.54). Marrandino also took second place in the 1600 (5:36.68).

In the 3200, Lucy Moran took first place (11:14.02). Budz claimed first place in the 300 hurdles (46.94). The 4x100 team, comprised of ZuZu Pont Strong, Djamilla Toukour, Buckley, and Budz, took second place in a time of 53.02. The 4x400 team (Ella Stone, Toukour, Buckley, and Budz) won in a time of 4:14.56.

Avery Clouse won the high jump (4-10), and Stone took second (4-6). In the long jump, Stone took second (16-9.75”), Pont Strong took fourth (15-3.75”), and Clouse recorded a jump of 15-3”. Pont Strong also took third in the triple jump (31-8). Zayna Cella earned a first place finish in the javelin (76-2), while Cecile Hazen took third place (69-7). Cella also took second in the discus (74-8), and Cheyenne Wilson took third (74-3).

“Joelle Budz had a memorable last home meet, winning four events with outstanding times. She has become a leader and and a top performer throughout her four years,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “All three girls in the long jump had state qualifying efforts. It may have been the first time we had three over 15-3 ever. I am very proud of the work this team has done and look forward to more success.”
