Baseball Wins Twice, Softball Earns Two Victories

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford girls’ tennis traveled to Daniel Hand on April 29 and won 5-2. Caroline Hergan earned a win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-0), and Sophie Gochman (6-2, 6-0) won at No. 4 singles.

The Grizzlies doubles teams swept the board. Mia Hardy and Peyton Lynch competed in the top singles spot and won 7-5, 6-2. Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Kate Gasparini and Breann Shelton earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in the third doubles spot.

The team then hosted Amity on April 30 and earned a 5-2 win. Molly Peterson earned a No. 3 singles win (6-0, 6-0), and Gochman won at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-0).

Hardy and Lynch won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Gipson and Kellner won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. Gasparini and Shelton earned a 7-6, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 doubles spot.

On May 2, Guilford hosted Branford and won 6-1. Hergan won at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-0), and Peterson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Thitida Kham earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.

The top doubles pairing of Gipson and Kellner won 6-4, 6-3. Gasparini and Shelton won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Julia Castonguay and Olivia Cowperthwait earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at third doubles.

On May 3, the Grizzlies played host to Mercy and earned a 6-1 win. Kallie Kagan (6-0, 6-1) won at No. 1 singles. Peterson (6-0, 6-0) earned a No. 2 singles win. Gochman won at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1), and Sabrina Chung (6-1, 6-3) won at No. 4 singles.

On the doubles side, Hardy and Lynch won at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-0. Gipson and Kellner earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Guilford closed out the week at home on April 4 and defeated Fitch 5-2. Kagan won 6-0, 6-3 in the top singles spot. Peterson earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.

For doubles, Hardy and Lynch won 6-0, 6-1. In the second spot, Gipson and Kellner won 6-0, 6-1. Gasparini and Shelton earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team traveled to Notre Dame-West Haven on April 29 and won 9-3. Brandon Rosa pitched five strong innings, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs, and Bryce Meder pitched the final two innings, striking out five Green Knights.

Meder also crushed a double that gave Guilford a 3-2 lead in the third inning. In the top of the sixth, the Grizzlies added to their lead when Lucas Deshefy led off with a single, and Mike Buccaro drove a two-run homer high over the Quigley right-field wall, making it 5-2. Guilford then busted the game open in the top of the seventh, when Matt DiNardo's bases-loaded single got past the Notre Dame left-fielder, scoring all three Grizzly baserunners and making it 9-3.

On May 1, the team traveled to East Lyme and recorded a big 12-3 victory. Junior Adam Copeland earned his fourth win of the year, pitching five strong innings. Sophomore Tanner Smith and freshman Cade Rinehart each worked a scoreless, hitless inning in relief. Back-to-back RBI singles by Deshefy and Buccaro gave the Grizzlies two early runs. Lucas Ametrano also struck a two-out double, and Colin Pompano scored him on an RBI single. Rosa and Meder also had RBIs in the contest.

Guilford hit the road to Xavier on May 3 and fell 5-4. Meder pitched a great game for the Grizzlies, going seven full innings, allowing just three earned runs on six hits while striking out nine Xavier batters. In the top of the seventh inning, Guilford put up four runs but it wasn’t enough as the team took a loss for just the fourth time this spring.

Softball

On April 29, Guilford softball traveled to West Haven and won 12-2. Ella Munson had a big day at the plate, as she drove in five runs on three hits. Adrianna Piascik and Mallory Sedorra drove in two runs each, and Sarah O’Brien and Addie Smith were each credited with one RBI. O’Brien and Sophia Meade added three hits each. Meade pitched a complete seven-inning game, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out 14 batters.

On May 1, the team hosted Foran and won 1-0. Munson hit a home run in the contest, and Meade recorded two hits. Meade also went seven shutout innings on the mound, giving up three hits and striking out 12 batters.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

On May 1, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team competed in a tri-meet with Daniel Hand and Cheshire. The Grizzlies fell 96-53 vs. Hand and 88-62 vs. Cheshire.

The Guilford throwing team had an incredible day, taking first place in all three events and sweeping all scoring positions for the discus throw.

James Oberg remains unbeaten in the shot put in dual meets with a throw of 50'4.5, and he took second in the discus with a throw of 125'10. Timmy Hastings won the discus with a throw of 128'8, and he took fifth in the shootout with a throw of 32'8.5. Ethan Wienkamp won the javelin with a throw of 143'8 and took fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.9.

Coleman Love ran a commanding 1600 race, winning with a time of 4:32.51. Sophomore Wesley Tandler took third in the discus with a throw of 124'1, and he took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 37'8.

Andres Gutierrez took second in the triple jump with a jump of 40'6, took second in the 400 with a time of 50.78, and took third in the 100 with a time of 11.45. Alex Hansen took second in the 3200 race with a time of 10:18.4.

Sophomore Ben Glascoff claimed second place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.35, and Trey Chiefo took fourth in the long jump (18'7) and the high jump (5'4). Max Freeman took fourth in the 400 with a time of 52.71, and sophomore Aiden Ruotolo took sixth in the 100 with a personal best 11.67.

On May 4, the team attended the Org-Jake Spartan Invitational at Amity High School. The Grizzlies finished fifth in team scoring in a field of 21 teams while securing five total podiums and two event winners.

Gutierrez was the most notable standout from Guilford, shattering the school’s 300 hurdle record with a time of 38.75. Gutierrez is now the top ranked 300 hurdler in the state of Connecticut.

The Guilford 4x800 meter team led the day off with a hard-fought win in a time of 8:30.6 Enzo Taverna led the team off with a 2:08.29 opening leg, followed by Alex Milano running 2:09.26, then Mackinley Cho ran a 2:08.03. It culminated with a conquering performance from Hansen overtaking the two leading teams with a time of 2:06.04.

The 4x400 team finished third with a time of 3:31.82. They ran an impressive race, led by Wienkamp and Freeman running a 1:49.23 in the opening two legs, followed by Love running a 53.99 third leg. It culminated with Gutierrez running the anchor leg with a split of 49.61. In his leg of the race, Gutierrez overtook the St. Joseph anchor leg, leading to a third place finish for the Grizzlies.

Cooper Woods placed second in the 3200 with a career-best 10:17.35. Woods beat his career best by 10 seconds.

Oberg placed second in the shot put with a 48'10.75 throw.
