Baseball Wins a Pair, Golf Earns a Victory
Baseball
H-K baseball hosted Cromwell on April 29 and won 11-1. Matt Shea had four hits and drove in two runs to lead the Cougar attack. Luke Mauri chipped in two hits and scored three runs, while Max Selmer tripled in the fifth inning to drive in two. Todd Butler scattered two hits and struck out eight batters for his third win.
The team then hosted Old Saybrook on April 30 and earned a 9-1 victory. Shea pitched seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out 13 batters for the win. Liam Christopher and Mauri each had three hits to lead the Cougars’ offense.
On May 1, the team traveled to North Branford and fell 2-1. Joey Salafia had two hits for the Cougars.
The Cougars hit the road to Morgan on May 4 and took a 13-3 loss.
Golf
The H-K golf team hosted Old Lyme on April 29 and won 160-214. Declan Kessler was the medalist for the match with a 37. Andrew Crayton scored a 40, Owen Staskelunas earned a 41, and Cam Moore recorded a 42.
Outdoor Track
On April 30, the H-K boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted a tri-meet at the Richard Dupuis Track against Old Lyme and Westbrook. The boys’ team defeated Westbrook by a score of 141-6 and Old Lyme by a score of 102-47 to improve their dual meet season record to 6-0.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Daniel McCourt in th 800 (2:04), Jack Cozean in the 1600 (4:47), Luke Hedges in the 3200 (10:31), Eli Hamann-Shay in the 400 (54.0), Dylan Churyk in the 110 hurdles (20.5), Trevor Dixon in the javelin (136'6"), Luke Staskelunas in the triple jump (38'4"), Mitchell Kelsey in the discus (125'3"), Tetsua Imai in the high jump (5'2"), and Ryan Ruggerio in the pole vault (11'0"). The boys also swept all three relays, winning the 4x800, 4x100, and 4x400.
The H-K girls’ team went 2-0 on the day, as they defeated Old Lyme by a score of 78-64 and beat Westbrook by a score of 91-45 to improve to 5-1 in dual meets this season.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Adriana Garoppolo in the 200 (28.3), Charlotte Behnke in the 3200 (13:57), Jayani Bennett in the 100 hurdles (17.7), Delaney Aronson in the 300 hurdles (54.2), and Margaret Robinson in the javelin (76'5"). The girls’ 4x800 relay team was also victorious on the afternoon to contribute team points.
