The Guilford golf team hosted Daniel Hand at Madison Country Club on April 17 and won 171-183. The Grizzlies were led by Andrew Beauton who scored a 39.
Girls’ Tennis
Guilford girls’ tennis traveled to Career Magnet on April 23 and won 7-0. Kallie Kagan won by default at No. 1 singles. Julia Castonguay won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Ava Scandone earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the third singles spot. Clara Arpie competed at No. 4 singles and won 6-0, 6-0.
For doubles, Teagan Doheny and Jada Preble won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams won by default.
On April 24, the team traveled to Hamden and recorded a 7-0 victory. Kagan won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Caroline Hergan (No. 2 singles) won 6-1, 6-0. Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) earned a third singles win, and Thitida Kham competed at fourth singles and punched in a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
For doubles, Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner won 6-1, 6-2. McKenna Clark and Juliette Kellner won 6-0, 6-0, and Sabrina Chung and Veronica Zuniga earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On April 23, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team hosted Fairfield Prep and Wilbur Cross in a tri-meet. The Grizzlies beat both teams, defeating Fairfield Prep 90-49 and Wilbur Cross 94-45.
Guilford won the 4x400 meter relay (Alex Milano, Coleman Love, Gabriel Grassi, and Mackinley Cho) with a time of 3:45.31. The 4x800 relay team (Ethan Wienkamp, Max Freeman, Andres Gutierrez, and Alex Hansen) also earned a victory with a time of 8:48.21.
Wienkamp won the javelin with a throw of 143'5, placed third in the 400 with a time of 53.68, and took third in the high jump with a jump of 5'4. Teammate Alan Shapera took fourth in that event, clearing 5'4, as well. Enzo Taverna won the 3200 with a time of 10:24.63, and Love won the 800 with a time of 2:03.02.
James Oberg won the shot put with a throw of 46'7.5 and placed second in the discus with a throw of 101'6. Timmy Hastings won the discus with a throw of 115'9 and took third in the shot put with a throw of 37'11.5. Gutierrez won the triple jump with a jump of 41'6.
Benjamin Glascoff won the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.57 and took fifth place in the long jump with a jump of 18'9.5. Wesley Tandler took second in the shot put with a throw of 38' 6.75 and third in the discus with a throw of 94'11.
The 4x100 team (Aiden Ruotolo, Stephano Jarin, Grassi, and Trevor Ridley) took second with a time of 45.5, and Jarin took second in the 200 with a time of 23.93. Hansen placed second in the 1600 with a time of 4:46, while Milano took second in the 800 with a time of 2:08.
Trey Chiefo took third in the long jump with a jump of 19'1.5, and Cooper Woods took third in the 3200 (4:46.5). Cho earned a third place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:16, while Aiden Soper took third in the triple jump with a jump of 37'2. Maddox Formica took third in the 3200 with a time of 12:10.
Baseball
On April 22, Guilford baseball traveled to Cheshire and won 10-5. Brandon Rosa earned his first win of the year by pitching six solid innings in his start, and Bryce Meder went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and three RBI. In the top of the second inning, Lucas Deshefy hit a two-RBI single to give Guilford an early lead. Lucas Ametrano also recorded an RBI single late, and Adam Copeland came on in relief and shut the door on the Rams.
On April 24, the team traveled to Daniel Hand and took a 3-2 loss in eight innings. Meder pitched seven innings and allowed one run. Matt DiNardo hit a homerun in the eighth inning. He went 2-for-4 and drove in both Grizzlies runs.
The Grizzlies ended the week on April 27, when they hosted West Haven and won 7-6 in walk-off fashion. Colin Pompano went 2-for-3 and scored the winning run in the seventh inning. DiNardo hit an RBI single to drive in that run. Adam Copeland pitched five innings and gave up three runs. Meder also recorded three RBI.
Softball
On April 22, Guilford softball traveled to Daniel Hand and won 2-1. Ella Munson recorded two hits, including a double, Mallory Sedorra added two hits of her own. Sophia Meade pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up four hits and allowing one earned run. She also recorded 10 strikeouts in the victory.
On April 24, the team hosted Hamden and recorded a 6-1 win. Addie Smith went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Kennadie Tansey, Sarah O’Brien, and Munson (2-for-4) each recorded an RBI. O’Brien earned the victory on the mound, pitching seven strong innings and just giving up five hits and no earned runs. She also recorded 10 strikeouts.
The Grizzlies closed out the week on April 25, hosting Lyman Hall and winning 4-3. Guilford’s runs were driven in by Tansey, Katherine Eaton, Peton LaMay, and Meade. Tansey, LaMay, O’Brien, and Meade all had two hits apiece. Meade pitched eight innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 batters.
