Girls’ Lacrosse Loses an Intense One, Boys’ Tennis Wins Twice
Girls’ Lacrosse
North Haven girls’ lacrosse hosted Jonathan Law on the turf on April 22. In one of the more exciting games over the past few years, North Haven fell 11-10 in an overtime thriller.
The teams battled to a 5-5 tie in the first half. The Nighthawks had goals by seniors Catherine Bianchi (3), Grace Martin, and junior Chloe Vogel with 10 seconds left in the half to keep it even. Junior goaltender Emily Shea kept the game close all day with 14 saves. The defense, led by seniors Mal Gazzarapu, Ava Chagnon, Kiley Pollard, and juniors Olivia Holovach and Rap Raposo, battled on the back line all day.
The second half of the game had an added intensity. Junior Clare Cullagh dominated at the draw, but the Nighthawks had trouble converting to goals. Law opened the lead to 10-7, and the Nighthawks responded with three goals in the last three minutes by seniors Maddy Karavas, Bianchi, and Vogel with 0.7 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. The crowd went wild, as Vogel’s last-second heroics knotted the score.
The sudden death overtime took many twists in two short minutes. While North Haven had two chances to win the game, Law converted on a crazy lose ball to win the tilt.
Boys’ Tennis
On April 22, the North Haven boys’ tennis team hosted Cheshire and took a 6-1 loss. Paul Wilson-McCarthy and Brendan Grudberg earned a win at No. 3 doubles (2-6, 6-1, 10-8).
The team then traveled to Sheehan on April 24 and won 5-2. Jack Segna earned a win at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-4), and Priyam Upadhyay won at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-3).
On the doubles side, Nathan Oh and Sam Giering earned a 6-2, 6-0 win. Andrew Bautz and Robert Allison won 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-4, and Wilson-McCarthy and Grudberg won 6-3 6-4.
The Nighthawks ended the week Jonathan Law on April 26 and recorded a 4-3 win. Seth Tobin earned a victory at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-3). Parthiv Patel won at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-4), and Segna earned a No. 3 singles victory (6-2, 6-4).
Oh and Giering won at No. 1 doubles (7-6(6), 7-6(4).
Softball
On April 22, North Haven softball hosted West Haven and won 13-5. Emelia Brandi went 3-for-4 with a double. Chloe Belcher recorded three hits and drove in three runs. Alexandra Anquillare, Alyssa Ferriouolo, Isabella Blanchard, and Alyssa DiGiovanna all drove in two runs each. DiGiovanna also had two doubles. On the mound, Gabriella Blanchard pitched three innings and gave up four hits and one earned run. She also recorded two strikeouts. Reece Hebert pitched four innings and gave up seven hits and three earned runs. She also recorded three strikeouts.
The team then hosted Mercy on April 24 and lost 6-2. DiGiovanna drove in a run for the Nighthawks on two hits. Anquillare also recorded a double. Hebert pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up two earned runs and striking out 10.
North Haven then hit the road to Jonathan Law on April 25 and won 13-5.
The team then ended the week at Lauralton Hall on April 27, where the squad grabbed an 11-3 victory.
