Baseball Wins Three Times, Boys’ Golf Splits the Week
Baseball
The Hand baseball team traveled to East Haven on April 22 and won 17-5 in six innings. Vinny Benevento had four hits, while Nick Antonetti and Ben Kuja each had three hits. Paul Calandrelli and Nick Maynard both recorded two hits and three RBI, while Sam Markovitz and David Quoka had two hits each. Tai Nuzzi had three RBI. Payton Powell earned the win on the mound.
On April 24, the Tigers hosted Guilford and won 3-2 in eight innings. Owen Scarice pitched five innings and allowed only one run. Brandon SanMarco pitched three innings of relief to earn the win. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Kuja tied the game with an RBI double. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Maynard walked it off with a sacrifice fly. Calandrelli and Will Patla both had two hits.
Hand hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on April 26 and fell 8-6 in nine innings. Antonetti had three hits, and Nuzzi and Patla added two each.
The next day, the Tigers played host to Branford and won 11-1 in six innings. Powell improved his record to 5-0 while pitching six innings, striking out nine batters, and not allowing a walk or an earned run. Quoka had a two-RBI single, and Patla and Maynard each had RBI doubles. As a team, Hand stole 17 bases.
Boys’ Golf
On April 15, the Hand boys’ golf team traveled to Clinton to take on Morgan and Haddam-Killingworth. The Tigers were able to win both matches. Hand scored a 182, H-K earned a 188, and Morgan recorded a 196. Sophomore Cam Knight was the medalist for the tri-match with a 38. It was the first time he has earned medalist honors.
The team then traveled to Portland on April 16 to take on Xavier. Xavier played excellent golf and prevailed by a score of 158-178. Hand was led by Kas Lesnik with a 37.
On April 17, Hand was the visitor against Guilford at Madison Country Club. The Grizzlies bested Hand by a score of 171-183.
Hand hosted Shelton at Madison Country Club on April 22. It was a tight match, but the Tigers were able to scratch out a 178-181 victory. Hand was led by Matt McManus with a 41, while Knight chipped in with a 42.
Softball
On April 22, the Hand softball team hosted Guilford and took a 2-1 loss. Lexi Guerrette went 1-for-3 and drove in the Tigers’ lone run. Taylor Ferraiolo, Bianca Pasquinelli, Alexa Young, and Danielle Phelan each recorded a hit. Erin Cerny took the mound for Hand, pitching seven innings and giving up 10 hits and two earned runs. She also added two strikeouts to the stat sheet.
On April 24, the team traveled to Sacred Heart Academy and won 13-11. Guerrette (3-for-4) and Young (2-for-4) drove in three runs each. Tatum Cash drove in two runs on two hits. Lena Aguzzi and Bianca Pasquinelli each recorded an RBI.
The Tigers hit the road to Sheehan on April 26 and fell 6-5. Pasquinelli drove in two runs for Hand. Guerrette, Cash, and Young each drove in a run. Cash, Pasquinelli, and Phelan all recorded a pair of hits.
