On April 4, the North Haven girls’ rugby team faced both Staples and Fairfield Ludlowe at Staples. Despite a rough first game, the girls powered through and came out strong. Sophomore Angela Lin was named as Player of the Games for her incredible effort on the field. She scored three tries, making her the highest scorer on the team. Captain Sara McCarthy assisted with a conversion kick, and sophomore Tessa Boisseau had strong tackles and produced a great performance.
The team then hosted Staples on April 11 and played strong and fast. Freshman Yuhan Zhang and junior Ivelisse Rivera-Kelly were selected as Players of the Game. Zhang made great tackles on defense and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Rivera-Kelly had great runs that got North Haven closer to the try line Freshman Charlotte Green was the sturdiest prop and lifter.
Softball
The North Haven softball team traveled to Branford on April 15 and won 20-1. Alexandra Anquillare had a big game, driving in five runs. Other players to record RBIs were Gabriella Blanchard (two), and Isabella Blanchard (two). Emerson Rooney, Avery Berney, Emelia Brandi, Kaydence Ford, Bianca Watts, Alyssa Ferriouolo, Audra Everone, Ava Shamett, Kylie Schwab, and Alyssa DiGiovanna all drove in a run each. Ninamarie Demannato pitched four innings, giving up two hits and zero earned runs. She also recorded seven strikeouts. Reece Hebert then pitched one inning and gave up no runs.
The team then hosted Amity on April 16 and won 2-1. Hebert was the winning pitcher, pitching a complete game five-hitter with four strikeouts. Anquillare recorded an RBI in the game with one hit.
The Nighthawks hit the road to East Haven on April 17 and earned a 14-2 victory. Blanchard drove in four runs on three hits, and Anquillare and Ferriouolo drove in two scores each. Blanchard also pitched five innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out eight batters.
Boys’ Tennis
North Haven boys’ tennis hosted Lyman Hall on April 15 and fell 4-3. Jack Segna earned a win at No. 2 singles (7-5, 2-6, 6-2).
For doubles, Nathan Oh and Sam Giering won 6-1, 6-3. Paul Wilson-McCarthy and Cody Molyneaux won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
On April 16, the team traveled to Hamden and won 4-3. Parthiv Patel won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Segna also earned a win at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-2).
Andrew Bautz and Robert Allison earned a doubles victory (6-2, 7-5), and Wilson-McCarthy and Priyam Upadhyay won 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(8).
The team played host to Xavier on April 17 and took a 6-1 loss. Segna earned the lone win for the Nighthawks at No. 3 singles (6-1, 3-6, 6-4).
North Haven closed out the week hosting Wilcox Tech on April 19, and the team earned a 6-1 victory. Singles wins came from Patel (6-0, 6-0), Segna (6-2, 6-1), Braden Cohen (6-0, 6-2), and Upadhyay (6-0, 6-0).
For doubles, Oh and Giering won 6-2, 6-3, while Dylan Couture and Matthew Pierce won 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 tiebreak.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On April 19, three seniors from the North Haven boys’ outdoor track team attended the CT Distance Festival. Charlie Coughlin ran the 1600 meters and recorded a time of 5:01.7, which was a personal record (PR) and fourth in the flight. Matthew DeNardis competed in the 1600 with a time of 4:40.03, which was also a new PR and 16th in the flight. Additionally, Nico Boyle earned fourth place in the 5000 with his time of 15:15.26, a PR and a new North Haven school record.
