Girls’ Tennis Wins Twice, Golf Wins a Match


Baseball

The Hand baseball team traveled to Shelton on April 15 and won 6-1. Payton Powell pitched six innings and allowed one run. Paul Calandrelli had a two-RBI double, and Nick Antonetti recorded two hits. Antonetti, Vinny Benevento, and Will Patla all had RBI singles, while Ben Kuja had two hits and scored two runs.

On April 19, the Tigers hosted Hamden and won 2-1. Brandon SanMarco pitched a complete game, striking out five batters and allowing one run. Calandrelli and Kuja both had RBIs, and Antonetti and Sam Markovitz each recorded hits.

Girls’ Tennis

On April 15, Hand girls’ tennis began a long string of matches at home with a narrow loss to Amity, 4-3. Junior Antoinette Lowy cruised to an easy win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Hand received another singles win at the No. 4 spot from sophomore Emma Lee (7-5, 6-1). The Tigers' other win came from junior Mia Scott and sophomore Skylar Powers at No. 2 doubles, winning in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

“Even the losses were hard-fought battles, with all lines playing well and just missing the mark at the end,” said Head Coach John Gage. “This was the closest Hand has come to a win against historically strong SCC powerhouse Amity in many years, and they are already looking forward to their Wednesday, May 8 rematch to pull out a win.”

On April 17, the team hosted Sacred Heart Academy and came out on top with a 7-0 win. Lowy (No. 3 singles) and Lee (No. 4 singles) both won in straight shutout sets, and all three doubles teams dominated, giving up only seven total games between them. Battles were waged on the other two singles courts, with sophomore Loden Bradstreet winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 singles and junior Ella Helfrich outlasting a very tough No. 2 singles opponent 7-5, 6-4.

Hand closed out the week at home with another shutout win, this time against North Haven on April 19. Playing singles for Hand were Bradstreet, Helfrich, Lowy, and Lee, all winning in straight sets. At No. 1 doubles,Teagan Ariyan and Juliana Jorens battled tough opponents and prevailed 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4). Scott and Powers continued their winning ways at No. 2 doubles, claiming a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Making their varsity debut for Hand at No. 3 doubles, sophomores Lilah Browning and Brynn Poole came out on the winning side 6-4, 6-1.

Golf

The Hand golf team traveled to Morgan on April 15 for a match that also included Haddam-Killingworth. The Tigers scored a 182 overall to win. Cameron Knight led the way with a 38 on the course, followed by Kasimir Lesnik with a 45. Matthew McManus scored a 46, and Jake Roberts earned a 53. Nick Osterling rounded out the scoring with a 64.
