Girls’ Outdoor Track Wins Tri-Meet, Baseball Wins Two Contests
Golf
The H-K golf team traveled to Morgan on April 15 for a match that also included Daniel Hand. The Cougars came in second with an overall score of 188. Owen Staskelunas scored a 44 on the course, while Declan Kessler, Andrew Crayton, and Cam Moore all scored a 48. Axel Kolcio earned a 50.
On April 16, the team hosted Cromwell and won 178-181. Kessler was the medalist for the match, scoring a 40. Staskelunas scored a 42, Moore scored a 47, and Crayton scored a 49.
Outdoor Track
On April 16, the Haddam Killingworth boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams opened their season, as they hosted a tri-meet against Portland and Hale Ray. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams came away with two victories on the day, as the boys defeated Hale Ray by a score of 135-2 and Portland by a score of 105-34 to start the dual meet season 2-0.
Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Jack Cozean in the 800 (2:12) and the 1600 (4:49), Sam Greenwood in the 100 (11.4), Daniel McCourt in the 3200 (10:29), Wes Stevens in the 110 hurdles (19.4), Luke Hedges in the 300 hurdles (46.4), Trevor Dixon in the javelin (144'6”), Mitchell Kelsey in the shot put (41'2.5”) and the discus (114'2”), Joe Slane in the long jump (18'4”), Luke Staskelunas in the triple jump (39'0”), Tetsuya Imai in the high jump (5'4”), and Ryan Ruggerio in the pole vault (10'6”). The boys’ 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams also won their events.
The H-K girls’ team also went 2-0 on the day to begin the dual meet season, as they defeated Hale Ray by a score of 129-10 and beat Portland 114-22. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (12.5), 200 (26.3), and 400 (59.7), Jayani Bennett in the 100 hurdles (17.1), Charlotte Behnke in the 3200 (12:33), Margaret Robinson in the javelin (81'9”), Emmerson Goeden in the shot put (25'8”) and discus (87'0”), Kaleigh Nelligan in the pole vault (7'6”), Adrianna Garoppolo in the long jump (14'2”), and Anna Wojnarowicz in the high jump (3'8”). The girls’ 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams were also victorious on the afternoon to contribute valuable team points.
Baseball
On April 16, H-K baseball hosted Portland and won 11-2.
The Cougars then played host to Windsor Locks on April 19 and earned an 8-2 win. Todd Butler pitched 5.2 innings, striking out six and allowing three hits for the win. Luke Mauri led the Cougar attack with two hits that drove in four runs. Joey Salafia and Blake Kamoen each had two hits for H-K.
