Girls’ Basketball Cruises in State Tournament, While Fencing Splits a Competition

Girls’ Basketball

The North Haven girls’ basketball team hosted Hillhouse in the first round of the SCC Tournament on Feb. 15, earning a 71-42 victory.

In the quarterfinals on Feb. 17, the team faced No. 3 Amity and pulled off a 59-57 upset. Olivia Ball was the MVP of the game, scoring 21 points for the Nighthawks.

The team then took on No. 2 seeded Sacred Heart Academy in the semifinals on Feb. 19, falling by a score of 73-49. Ava Johnson scored 11 points to lead North Haven.

North Haven entered the Class MM State Tournament as the No. 11 seed. The team hosted No. 22 Killingly in the first round on Feb. 27, earning a 50-41 win.

In the second round on March 1, the team traveled to No. 6 Suffield and pulled off a 53-40 upset.

Fencing

The North Haven fencing team faced Hopkins on Feb. 27. The boys lost a tough match 10-17, with men’s foil and men’s epee both earning 5-4 victories, and men’s sabre losing 0-9. Matt Kompare went 3-0 for men’s epee, and Ben Pollio paced the men’s foil squad by going undefeated, as well.

The girls won 22-12, with epee winning 10-6 and foil winning 8-1. Women’s sabre lost a close match 4-5. Rachel Adams and Hanako Moffat both went 3-0 for foil to lead the girl’s team. Uni Khondoker earned her first varsity win for the women's epee squad.
