The Old Saybrook girls’ basketball team traveled to Coginchaug on Feb. 5 and lost 62-42. Old Saybrook got off to a good start and led after one period, 18-15, behind some excellent shooting and offensive execution. The last three quarters were a struggle, as the shots stopped dropping, the fouls accumulated, and key players went to the bench in foul trouble. Ultimately, there were too many obstacles for the Rams to overcome, including the outstanding shooting by Coginchaug's Sophie Farr. She had 31 points, including a big fourth quarter outburst.
“We just were battling uphill the last three period,s and it was a tough environment to overcome,” said Head Coach Steve Woods after the game.
The Lady Rams bounced back at Old Lyme on Feb. 9, in the annual “Battle For The Bridge” game. Old Saybrook won easily vs. a scrappy but over-matched Wildcats team, 56-35. The Rams jumped out to a big lead after one quarter and coasted the rest of the way, with every member of the team getting plenty of time.
Old Saybrook was led in scoring by Breleigh Cooke (18 points), Kylie Lake (17 points), and Nora Kulmann (13 points), while Sanai Baker and Alex Ling were outstanding in both their floor game and defensively. Lake added 12 rebounds to continue her double/double performance.
Boys’ Basketball
The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team hosted North Branford on Senior Night on Feb. 14, battling it out to win a close 59-58 contest. Brendan Cassella scored 18 points, Brayden Cody had 13 points, Wes Percival had 16 points, Aiden D'Anna added 18 points, and Noah Hubbard scored four points.
