Indoor Track Shows Out at Conference Championship, Boys’ Basketball Records a Loss
Indoor Track
The North Branford boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Hillhouse on Feb. 2, with several athletes medaling in their events.
Aidan Chittenden performed well in the shotput (53'10.5”). His throw made him the Shoreline Champion, a new school record holder, and the Shoreline record holder, as well. Sam Gott stood out in the 55 meter prelims. He set a new school record and a new personal record, when he finished in a time of 6.61. In the finals, he placed third with a time of 6.91.
On the girls’ side, Destiney Christie competed in the 55, finishing in second place with a time of 7.67. This was a personal record time, and garnered her Second Team All-Shoreline honors. Sophia Sorrell took fourth in the high jump (4’8”), which was a new personal record.
The girls’ sprint medley relay team, comprised of Christie, Juliana Stimpson, Sorrell, and Daytona Kamienski, placed fifth with a personal record time of 4:52.26. In the 4x200 relay, Sorrell, Riley Cole, Stimpson, and Christie placed fourth with a personal record time of 1:58.41. In the 4x800, Meghan Tang, Idalis Lucero, Star Colon, and Kamienski ran a personal record time of 12:26.32, finishing in fifth place.
Boys’ Basketball
The North Branford boys’ basketball team traveled to Haddam-Killingworth on Feb. 6 and lost 67-53. Vic Castillo’s 12 points led the way for the Thunderbirds, followed by Jake Johns, who scored 10 points. Other contributors included CJ Cameron (nine points), Archie Yu (three points), Jason Cosgrove (two points), Justin Carusone (six points), Jack O’Brien (six points), and Charlie O’Brien (five points). Castillo hit four 3-pointers in the contest.
Fencing
The Amity/North Branford co-op fencing team is particularly focused on epee squad standings. It is shaping up to be a pretty interesting conference championship in that weapon. North Branford currently ranks No. 4 in the conference in men's, and No. 4 in women's, with a 62% win percentage. As of now, Cheshire men's epee is running undefeated, and the following three are in a tight pack decided by indicators. Women's epee is even more interesting, as Hand leads the pack by a hair.
