Girls’ Ice Hockey Wins a Trio, While Girls’ Basketball Earns a Big Win

Wrestling

The Hand wrestling team traveled to East Haven on Feb. 5 and narrowly fell 45-36. Andrew King earned a victory at 157 pounds by fall (0:29), while Ralph Carter (165 pounds) won by fall at 3:36. Carlos Santos also earned a win by fall (3:11) in the 285-pound match.

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball team hosted Amity on Feb. 6 and won 65-43. Kyle Hoffman’s 24 points led the way for the Tigers, followed by Elijah Avery-Turner, with 15 points. Aidan Doyle (five points), Jack Tompkins (three points), Tyler Maynard (nine points), Mike Mazzola (four points), Stone Leckey (two points), Chase Docker (one point), and Zeke Williams (two points) also contributed to the victory.

Girls’ Basketball

Hand girls’ basketball traveled to Branford on Feb. 6 and won 40-39. Tatum Cash led the way for the Tigers with 10 points, followed by Abbey Richard with nine. Other point scorers for Hand included Liza Jobson (two points), Juliette Brenza (eight points), Ana Davies (two points), Ella Bodner (five points), and Caroline Courtney (four points).

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op team traveled to Amity/Cheshire/North Haven on Feb. 7 and recorded a 5-1 win. Hannah Rich opened the scoring for the Tigers, with an unassisted goal in the first period. Kendall Dobratz also scored a goal, assisted by Maggie DiNapoli. Reagan Wyrebek-Brasky recorded two goals in the contest. One was assisted by Dobratz, and the other was assisted by Daniella Spaniotis. Faith Minickene also added a score (assisted by Taylor Manchanda). Chloe Monaghan manned the net for Hand and recorded 26 saves.

On Feb. 8, the team hosted Fairfield Ludlowe/Warde and won 5-0. Minickene had two goals in the contest. One was assisted by Wyrebek-Brasky, and the other was assisted by Dobratz. Dobratz also added two goals and one assist. Her first score was assisted by Brooke Ouellette, and the second one was unassisted. Wyrebek-Brasky also added a goal, assisted by Minickene.

The Tigers closed out the week on Feb. 10, hosting Guilford Co-op and winning 5-1. Minickene scored two goals. The first one was assisted by Rich, and the second one was assisted by Wyrebek-Brasky. Dobratz added an unassisted goal, and Rich added a score, assisted by Dobratz. Wyrebek-Brasky added to the score, with Minickene on the assist.

Fencing

The men’s and women’s team competed in two events this past week, with both teams beating North Haven and the Amity/North Branford Co-op.

Against a very tough North Haven team, the men’s saber and epee squads both picked up huge wins, while the men’s foil team took a loss. The men’s saber team had a clean sweep, winning 9-0. Junior Noah Lynch and freshman Owen Swift won three bouts each - bringing their record to 37-3 on the year. Juniors William Butler and Will Cassidy combined to pick up the final three wins on the evening.

In men’s epee, senior Hanley Tapia went a perfect 3-0, sophomore Robbie Ginsburg went 2-1, junior Mason Johnson went 1-1, with fellow junior Nicholas LeBlanc picking up the final win of the night. For the men’s foil team, junior captain Ricky Chamarro picked up the only two wins.

Overall, the men’s team won 18-9. The Amity/NB Co-op team only fences epee. The men’s team picked up a 6-3 win. Ginsburg went 2-0, Tapia went 2-1, Johnson went 1-0, and junior Max Stein picked up the last win against two losses.

The women’s team also had a very strong showing against North Haven. The women’s team won a close 5-4 meet against the previously undefeated in conference play North Haven saber squad. Senior captains Anna Ferrucci and Lily Paine both won two out of their three bouts, with junior Ella O’Malley picking up the decisive fifth win for the team. The women’s epee team also won 5-4. Both senior captains Norah Stotz and Arianna Takyar went 2-1, with fellow senior Addy Morada earning the important fifth victory. The win helped keep the women’s epee squad in first place in the conference.

The women’s foil squad completed the 5-4 sweep, winning their event as well. Juniors Shay Ryan and Maeve Wiles both went 2-1 in the meet, and senior captain Sarah Hagan was able to earn the important last win for the team. Against the Amity/NB Co-op, the women’s epee team earned a 6-3 win. All three women (Stotz, Takyar, and Morada) went 2-1. Stotz and Morada picked up huge wins against Amity’s B-rated fencer, Emily Gu, while Takyar narrowly lost 4-5.

Scholar Athletes

The SCC Conference recently announced its Scholar Athletes for the Fall 2023 season. Hand’s athletes to earn the honors were Amanda Coric (soccer) and Gavin Wagner (football).
