On Jan. 31, the Hand wrestling team hosted North Haven and narrowly fell 40-34. Wyatt Roberts picked up a win my major decision at 106 pounds (13-3). Noah Mylott won by fall at 120 pounds (1:14), and Larkin Pantano (150 pounds) won by fall at 2:10. Andrew King competed at 165 pounds and won by a 14-7 decision, while Ralph Carter (175 pounds) won by fall at 5:55. Paul Fumex also recorded a win for the Tigers, competing at 215 pounds and earning a victory by decision (9-2).
Boys’ Basketball
Hand boys’ basketball traveled to Career Magnet on Jan. 30 and won 62-49.
The team then hosted Notre Dame-West Haven on Feb. 2 and recorded a 64-53 loss. Aidan Doyle led the Tigers with 18 points, followed by Sam Markovitz with 12 points. Kyle Hoffman (nine points), Elijah Avery-Turner (eight points), and Thomas McCullough (six points) also contributed. Doyle also collected 12 rebounds in the contest to earn a double-double.
Fencing
The Hand fencing team began the week with a tri-meet at home vs. Cheshire and the Amity/North Branford co-op, followed up with hosting Hopkins, and ending the week with the statewide Novice Tournament (for first year fencers) at Guilford.
The women’s team had a great run, with a 25-2 victory over Cheshire. The women’s epee team (seniors Arianna Takyar, Norah Stotz, and Addy Morada) all went undefeated. For the women’s saber team, senior captain Anna Ferrucci went undefeated, while giving up only one point against her during the meet. Fellow senior captain Lily Paine also went undefeated. For the women’s foil team, juniors Maeve Wiles and Shay Ryan also had undefeated outings.
The women also picked up a 21-6 win against Amity/North Branford during the evening. The women had a similar strong outing against a very good Hopkins team, winning 17-10. Once again, Takyar, Stotz, Morada, Ferrucci, Paine, Wiles, and Ryan picked up significant wins, along with junior Ella O’Malley in saber. Senior captain Sarah Hagan picked up two wins apiece to help the women’s team notch another win.
At the Novice Tournament, freshman Maewyn Griswold picked up a sixth place medal in women’s saber, with fellow freshman Neveah Hastings not too far behind, finishing in 14th place. In women’s epee, Maddie Peete had a strong day, earning her first win of the year in the process.
The men’s team also had another strong week. Against Cheshire, the men earned a 17-10 victory. In men’s saber, freshman Owen Swift continued with his strong year, earning another three wins on the day. Junior Will Butler won both of his bouts, with fellow juniors Noah Lynch (two wins) and Will Cassidy (one win) rounding out the men’s saber dominant victory.
In men’s foil, junior novice Truman Looby earned his first varsity win of the season, while junior captain Ricky Chammaro added three wins on the day, as well. The men’s epee team was led by senior captain Hanley Tapia, who had another two wins added to his season total.
Against the Amity/North Branford co-op, the men also picked up a 21-6 win. When facing a very strong Hopkins team, the men won a close 14-13 meet. The men’s epee team had an outstanding day, with Tapia winning all of his bouts, and sophomore Robbie Ginsburg winning all of his bouts, as well.
At the Novice Tournament, Looby was earned the gold medal in men’s foil, with sophomore Gideon LaRiviere not far behind in sixth place. Looby defeated LaRiviere in a close 10-9 semifinals matchup. Freshman Griffin Brodie was right behind them in 13th place, and Jake Goldillo finished in 20th.
In the men’s saber portion of the tournament, sophomore Jack Varone had a great day, finishing in third place, while freshman Pablo Correa took ninth, and fellow freshman Eli Boyer claimed 15th. Finally, in the men’s epee division, freshman James Boyd placed seventh, sophomore David Bixon came in 12th, and freshman Jack Johnson took 17th.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op team hosted Hamden Co-op on Jan. 31 and ended in a 3-3 tie. Faith Minickene recorded a hat trick, with three unassisted goals.
On Feb. 2, the team played host to Masuk Co-op and lost 2-1. Hannah Rich scored the goal, unassisted, for the Tigers.
Hand rounded out the week at West Haven/SHA on Feb. 3, where the team grabbed a 3-2 win. The first goal was scored by Kendall Dobratz, assisted by Minickene. Taylor Manchanda found the net, assisted by Jaimey DiNapoli, and DiNapoli scored a goal of her own, assisted by Rich.
