Girls’ Indoor Track Produces All-Conference Athletes, Girls’ Basketball Earns a Win
Girls’ Basketball
The Branford girls’ basketball team traveled to Wilbur Cross on Jan. 30 and won 50-47. Shelby Burnham led the way with 23 points, followed by Jess Radziunas with 14. Raiyn Fries (six points), Reanna Sachs (four points), Ally Colburn (two points), and Kaylee Tracy (one point) also contributed.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Branford girls’ indoor track competed at the SCC Championship on Feb. 3, placing ninth out of 20 with 24 points. Glorianna Buckley won the 600 meters, with a time of 1:43.21, while Maddie Aguilar took ninth in that event (1:49.60). Avery Clouse (4’10”) claimed second place in the high jump.
Joelle Budz came in third in the 300 (42.74), and Buckley came in eighth (43.72). Djamilla Toukour finished that event in 17th place (46.16). Budz also had a strong performance in the 55, finishing sixth with a time of 7.50. Ella Stone (16’3.5”) took seventh in the long jump, and Clouse (14’7”) finished in 16th.
“Certainly Glorianna's win in the 600 was very big, an electric finish to the race and opened a big margin to gain the victory,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “She ran a very smart race. Avery really showed off her talent in the high jump to pick up second, and Joelle was a force in both the 55 and 300. She was excellent in the 300, running a competitive race until the end. I have said it all season, we may not have a lot of athletes, but what we have is talented and competitive. I am proud of their efforts today. Having two athletes make All-SCC was quite an accomplishment (Glorianna First Team in the 600 and Avery making Second Team in the high jump). Just about everyone had personal bests today.”
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op team hosted Hamden Co-op on Jan. 31 and ended in a 3-3 tie. Faith Minickene recorded a hat trick, with three unassisted goals.
On Feb. 2, the team played host to Masuk Co-op and lost 2-1. Hannah Rich scored the goal, unassisted, for the Tigers.
Hand rounded out the week at West Haven/SHA on Feb. 3, where the team grabbed a 3-2 win. The first goal was scored by Kendall Dobratz, assisted by Minickene. Taylor Manchanda found the net, assisted by Jaimey DiNapoli, and DiNapoli scored a goal of her own, assisted by Rich.
