Girls’ Indoor Track Shows Out in Conference Championship, Wrestling Earns Victories
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Guilford girls’ ice hockey co-op team hosted Amity/Cheshire/North Haven on Jan. 30 and lost 5-1. The lone goal for the Grizzlies was scored by Hailey Farace, assisted by Lauren DelGrego. Olivia Hwang played in goal for Guilford, and she recorded 32 saves.
The next day, the team traveled to Trumbull/St. Joseph and fell 3-2.
Wrestling
The Guilford wrestling team traveled to Fairfield Prep on Jan. 31 and won 51-30. Andrew Plancon (113 pounds) won by fall at 3:26, and Alez Uzzo (132 pounds) won by fall at 3:25. Elijah McDermott competed at 144 pounds and won by fall (1:08), while Owen Pelletier-Stephens (150 pounds) won by a 2-1 decision. Michael O’Donnell earned a win by fall at 190 pounds (5:50), and Tim Hastings (215 pounds) won by fall at 2:42. Logan Murphy competed in the 285-pound bout and won by fall at 0:38.
On Feb. 3, the Grizzlies traveled to New Fairfield for an invitational that also included Bethel, Branford, Haddam-Killingworth, Londonderry (NH), Nonnewaug, and Ridgefield. When facing the host school, Guilford won 58-22.
Dante Bilskis won at 120 pounds by a 10-1 major decision, and Uzzo won by fall at 132 pounds (3:31). McDermott (144 pounds) won by fall, and Pelletier-Stephens (150 pounds) won by fall at 1:59. Abdul Sabea competed at 157 pounds and won by fall at 1:29, while Jean-Paul Meguerditchian earned a win by fall at 175 pounds (2:49). Jonah Labbadai-Colon (190 pounds) earned a win by fall at 1:39. Hastings earned a victory at 215 pounds by by fall at 3:15, and Murphy won the 285-pound bout by fall at 1:13.
In a head-to-head matchup with Ridgefield, the Grizzlies fell 59-18.
Guilford went on to defeat Nonnewaug 57-13. Wins were recorded by Plancon at 113 pounds (by fall at 5:45), Bilskis at 120 pounds (by fall at 1:27), Uzzo at 132 pounds (by a 4-3 decision), Hyde Jacobson at 138 pounds (by a 4-1 decision), McDermott at 144 pounds (by a 5-4 decision), Garrett Mace at 165 pounds (by fall at 2:33), Meguerditchian at 175 pounds (by fall at 3:01), and Hastings at 215 pounds (by fall at 0:32).
The Grizzlies also went up against Londonderry and grabbed a 57-22 win. Plancon won the 113-pound bout by fall (3:10), and Bilskis (120 pounds) won by fall at 3:03. Uzzo grabbed a win at 132 pounds by an 8-3 decision, while Jacobson won by fall in the 138-pound matchup. McDermott won by fall at 144 pounds, and Pelletier-Stephens (150 pounds) won by fall at 1:31. Mace (165 pounds) won by fall at 3:70, while Labbadia-Colon (190 pounds) won by fall at 3:54. Hastings earned a win at 215 pounds by fall, while Murphy recorded a win by fall at 285 pounds.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Guilford girls’ indoor track team competed at the SCC Championships at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 3. The distance team had 11 girls qualify for the meet, and many of them medaled and placed in the top 15 in their respective events.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Ciara Davenport, Juliana Montgomery, Olivia Jackson, and Ana Sadlon, placed fifth at 10:36.40. Clara Gahm placed first in the 1000, for the third year in a row, at 3:07.91, and Daniella Selig placed fourth in the 600, with a time of 1:46.32. This time was Selig’s personal record in the event.
Several girls performed well in the 1600. Paige Ponzio placed seventh with a personal record of 5:39.12, Michaela Hogan placed 12th (6:07.16), and Indy Pelliccio placed 13th (6:08.59).
Gahm medaled in the 3200, placing sixth with a time of 11:49.40. Jackson placed 13th (12:42.13), Sadlon placed 15th (13:17.66), and Sienna Brackney placed 19th (13:42.51).
The 4x400 team placed eighth, with a time of 4:31.57. This team was comprised of Selig, Montgomery, Ponzio, and Davenport. Lily Sullivan jumped 4’6” and came in 11th place in the high jump.
