Madison Resident Wins Wrestling National Championship
The prestigious USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships were held last week in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Champions of the first leg will go after the USA Wrestling Triple Crown award by attempting to win the Freestyle and Greco Championships in the spring.
7-year-old Emory White, of Madison, pinned the No. 1 seed Ronan Niemer in the second period of the finals to win the 56-pound weight class in the 8-and-under division (8u). White was one of 12 Connecticut wrestlers to bring home a medal in the national championship meet for wrestlers age 6 to 14.
White from MarcAurele Wrestling bumped up from 53 pounds to dominate the 56 pound 8u division. White’s road to victory included a first round bye, followed by tech pinning Milo McCormick from Michigan in the quarterfinals. Then, White won by Major Decision vs. No. 2 seed Eli Michael from Indiana in the semifinals.
White, who only gave up one takedown the entire tournament in the finals against the No. 1 seed, is also currently ranked the No. 2 52-pounder in the Tulsa Nationals World of Wrestling (WOW) power rankings. White trains out of Niantic, CT under TJ MarcAurele.
