Boys’ Basketball Wins Two, Fencing Has a Strong Week

Boys’ Basketball

The Hand boys’ basketball team traveled to Guilford on Jan. 23 and won 64-54. Kyle Hoffman scored 18 points, and Elijah Avery-Turner followed with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

On Jan. 27, the team played host to East Haven and earned a 73-53 victory. Avery-Turner scored 23 points in the contest, followed by Aidan Doyle with 17. Hoffman (12 points) and Sam Markovitz (11 points) were also in double digits. Thomas McCullough scored five points, Jack Tompkins scored three points, and Orion Brueckner scored two.

Fencing

This past week in fencing, the Hand Tigers had meets away at Cheshire, North Haven, Simsbury, Hopkins, and Greenwich.

The men’s team won five of the meets by scores of 19-8 (Simsbury), 21-6 (Cheshire), 19-8 (North Haven), 16-11 (Hopkins), and 22-5 (Greenwich). The foil team was led by junior captain Ricky Chamorro, who improved to 20-4 on the season. During the meet against Greenwich, novice sophomore Gedeon LaRiviere picked up his first varsity win on the year.

For epee, the team is led by senior captain Hanley Tapia, who improved his overall record to 21-3. The saber squad was led by freshman Owen Swift, who improved to 24-2 on the season, including remaining undefeated in conference play. Junior William Butler is right behind him, at 20-4 on the season.

The women’s team won all five of their meets as well, by scores of 24-3 (Simsbury), 23-4 (Cheshire), 19-8 (North Haven), 17-10 (Hopkins), and 24-3 (Greenwich). The women’s foil team is equally led by the triumphant of senior captain Sarah Hagan, and juniors Shay Ryan and Maeve Wiles. The women’s epee team remains undefeated in conference play, with senior captains Arianna Takyar (23-4), Addy Morada (20-7), and Norah Stott (17-9) all having outstanding seasons.

The women’s saber squad had a strong week, as well. Senior captains Anna Ferrucci (15-3) and Lily Paine (22-6), and junior Ella O’Malley (16-9), continue to show why they are the reigning state champions.
