Boys’ Basketball Wins Two, Indoor Track Competes at Invitational

Boys’ Basketball

Morgan boys’ basketball traveled to Waterford on Jan. 22 and won 60-50. Jack Nye led the way with 17 points, followed by Patrick O’Neil with 14 points, and Mason Krott with 11. Other point scorers for the Huskies included Robby Estabrook (five points), Ryan Donadio (six points), and Kolby Clifton (seven points).

The next day, the team hosted Westbrook and won 80-30. Many athletes got in on the scoring action, but it started with Estabrook, who scored 15 points. Nye added 14 points in the win. O’Neil had four points, Donadio had eight points, and Clifton had two points. Krott (five points), Luke McComiskey (seven points), Kyle Kobelt (eight points), Wyatt Luke (six points), Griffin Ranaudo (five points), Hunter Mancini (four points), and Tyshawn Davis (two points) all helped contribute to the big victory.

Indoor Track

On Jan. 22, the Morgan boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed in the Joe Sinicrope Invitational at Hillhouse. Mike Derenzo came in 10th in the 55 meters (7.32) and Aaron Kennedy took 43rd (7.88). Josh Nager (55th place) ran a time of 7.99, while Peter Fortin-Roth took 67th (8,.45). Thomas O’Rourke finished the event in 68th place (8.46). Michael Fusco had a strong performance in the 300 meters, placing fourth with a time of 38.03. Nager took 37th (45.76) and Kennedy took 39th (46.29). Fortin-Roth (49.23) came in 44th.

In the 1600, Kaleb Richardson finished in 24th (5:30.98) and Owen Lombardi took 26th (5:33.02). Trevor Leach (34th place) finished with a time of 5:52.79. The boys’ 4x200 relay team, comprised of Aidan Campion, Fusco, Mark Rodriguez, and Derenzo finished in third place, with a total time of 1:42.60. O’Rourke took 37th place in the shot put (28-06.00) and Rowan Quinn took 52nd (24-09.00). Campion had a 10th place finish in the long jump (17-02.00) and Rodriguez finished in 18th (16-00.50).

On the girls’ side, Julia White place sixth in the 55 (8.17) and Rachel Spaziano took 17th (8.56). Gabriella Navarra finished in 25th place (8.82), while Shania Weisse took 60th with a time of 10.09. White also placed second in the 300 (45.74) and Spaziano (49.14) took 11th. Melanie Pugo competed in the 600 and placed 35th (2:15.59).

Natalie Estabrook raced in the 1600 and placed 17th (6:17.86), while Navarra finished the long jump in 15th place (13’04.00). Ainsleigh Landino (18-05.50) placed 25th in the shot put.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op team hosted Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks on Jan. 27 and won 4-3. Ryan Bunnell got the Yellowjackets on the board in the first period, with an assist from Enzo Plano. In the second period, Nick Perillo added to the scoring, assisted by Carter McGlinchey and Landon Cantele. East Haven added two more scores in the third frame. The first goal was scored by Preston Cantele, assisted by Bunnell and Plano, and Griffin McGlinchey scored the final goal, assisted by Lorenzo Defilio and Preston Cantele. Mike Fritz manned the net for East Haven, allowing three goals on 28 saves.
