Girls’ Ice Hockey Wins Three Times, Boys’ Basketball Grabs a Victory
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op team hosted Amity/Cheshire/North Haven on Jan. 10 and won 6-2. Faith Minickene had three goals and one assist, while Kendall Dobratz had one goal and one assist. Jaimy DiNapoli contributed with two goals and one assist, and Taylor Manchanda had one goal and one assist. Raegan Wyrebek-Brasky also added one assist.
The team then played host to Woodstock Academy Co-op on Jan. 12 and won 7-3. Minickene had four goals and one assist, and Dobratz had two goals. DiNapoli had one goal and one assist, while Alexa Spaniotis added two assists.
The next day, the team rounded out the week with a 3-2 overtime win at home vs. Southington. Wyrebek-Brasky scored two goals, including the overtime goal. Dobratz added one goal and one assist, and Minickene had two assists.
Wrestling
On Dec. 30, the H-K wrestling team traveled to the Morgan Duals. One of the teams the Cougars faced was East Haven, and they defeated the Yellowjackets by a score of 42-39.
Brian Nguyen won by fall at 106 pounds, and Noah McCarthy won by fall at 1:04 in the 120-pound bout. Amelia Peterson (126 pounds) won by fall at 1:12, and Louis Virgulto (132 pounds) won by fall at 1:12.
Gunnar Howes competed at 144 pounds and won by fall, while Kyle House (150 pounds) won by fall at 3:55. Mathias Schweitzer rounded out the scoring for H-K, with a win by fall at 4:32 at 175 pounds.
Boys’ Basketball
The H-K boys’ basketball team played host to Old Saybrook on Jan. 19 in its lone game of the week, recording a 61-50 win. Cody Robinson was the leading scorer for the Cougars, as he scored 22 points. Andrew Crayton followed with 15 points, and Blake Kamoen scored 10. Declan Moriarty and Spencer Savoy added five points each, and Luke Mauri and Jay Evans scored two points apiece. Crayton also collected 15 rebounds in the contest.
