Girls’ Basketball Wins a Tight Contest, Boys’ Ice Hockey Wins Two

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven Co-op boys’ ice hockey team hosted Westhill/Stamford on Jan. 15 and won 8-1. The team went off for four goals in the first period. Lorenzo Defilio started the scoring, with an assist being credited to Carter McGlinchey. Defilio then scored again a few minutes later, with Griffin McGlinchey on the assist. John D’Albero also scored two shorthanded goals in the period, with assists coming from Landon Cantele and Griffin McGlinchey.

In the second frame, Preston Cantele scored an unassisted goal on a Power Play, and Mike Savo came through with another Power Play goal, this time assisted by Ryan Bunnell. D’Albero also scored in the period, with Defilio on the assist. Finally, in the third period, Defilio scored an unassisted goal to wrap up the action. Mike Fritz allowed one goal in net, while recording 28 saves.

Two days later, the Yellowjackets played host to Daniel Hand and won 7-2 to continue their season dominance. Carter McGlinchey led off the scoring in the first period, with an unassisted goal. The team then tacked on three more goals in the second period. These were scored by Billy Demetriades (assisted by Preston Cantele and Nick Perillo), D’Albero (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey and Carter McGlinchey), and Griffin McGlinchey (assisted by Cantele).

In the third frame of game action, Bunnell added to the scoring with an unassisted goal, followed by Defilio, who was assisted by D’Albero and Griffin McGlinchey. Perillo closed out the scoring, with Demetriades on the assist. Fritz allowed two goals in net, with 27 saves.

East Haven rounded out the week with a trip to North Branford on Jan. 20, where the Yellowjackets faced their first loss of the season at 3-0. Fritz allowed two goals on 34 saves.

Wrestling

On Dec. 30, the East Haven wrestling team competed at the Morgan Duals. Haddam-Killingworth was one of the teams they faced in the match. Going head-to-head, the Yellowjackets lost by a score of 42-39. Jack Fletcher won by fall at 113 pounds, and Tin Trinh won by fall at 138 pounds (5:48). Alex Dombrowksi (157 pounds) won by a 10-9 decision, while Jacob Ushchak (165 pounds) won by fall at 1:23.

On Jan. 13, the team traveled to the Ellis Tech Duals. When facing Jonathan Law, the Yellowjackets fell 45-35.

Fletcher won by fall at 113 pounds, and Gonul Celik won by fall at 120 pounds. Trinh (138 pounds) won by technical fall (17-2). Dombrowski also earned a win for East Haven at 150 pounds by fall (1:59), and Ushchak won the 157-pound bout by fall (2:42). Joe Allen competed at 215 pounds, winning by fall at 1:44.

The team then traveled to Xavier on Jan. 17 and took a rough, 82-0 loss.

On Jan. 20, East Haven wrestling traveled to Platt for a match that also included Canton, Nonnewaug, and Windham. When the team went head-to-head with Platt, they took a 67-12 loss. Fletcher won the 113-pound bout by fall (3:16), and Dombrowski won at 150 pounds by fall (3:42).

East Haven also won a tight matchup vs. Nonnewaug by a score of 43-42. Fletcher won at 113 pounds by fall (1:47), and Brandon Santos competed at 126 pounds and won by fall (1:14). Trinh (138 pounds) won by fall at 1:45, while Dombrowski (150 pounds) won by fall at 1:51. Allen rounded out the scoring for the Yellowjackets, earning a victory by fall at 2:27 in the 215-pound bout.

Girls’ Basketball

East Haven girls’ basketball traveled to Branford on Jan. 19 and won 49-43. Julianna Iovino was the leading scorer, with 18 points. Kelsey Murray added 14 points in the win, and Gianna Castellano scored nine. Olivia Martin (six points) and Brooke Dennis (two points) also contributed to the victory.
