Boys’ Ice Hockey Pulls off Massive Upset

The North Branford boys’ ice hockey team traveled to Lyman Hall on Jan. 17 and won 5-3. CJ Sherwood got the offense going, with two goals in the first period. His first score was assisted by Brady Martinik and Jake Pedersen, and the second one was assisted by Pedersen and Chris Maisano.
In the second frame, Connor Stoner scored off of a pass from Maisano, and Michael Matteo scored an unassisted goal. Stoner then added his second score of the night, on an empty netter. Goaltender Austin Fruin recorded 26 saves.
On Jan. 20, the Thunderbirds hosted East Haven Co-op and pulled off a 3-0 upset against a team that had previously been undefeated. Sherwood scored the first North Branford goal, assisted by Colin Augur. Max Becker added two unassisted goals in the third period. In net, Fruin allowed zero goals while recording 41 saves. This was Fruin’s first shutout of his high school career.
