Boys’ Basketball Grabs a Win, Indoor Track Shines in Old Saybrook Qualifier
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven Co-op boys’ ice hockey team hosted Westhill/Stamford on Jan. 15 and won 8-1. The team went off for four goals in the first period. Lorenzo Defilio started the scoring, with an assist being credited to Carter McGlinchey. Defilio then scored again a few minutes later, with Griffin McGlinchey on the assist. John D’Albero also scored two shorthanded goals in the period, with assists coming from Landon Cantele and Griffin McGlinchey.
In the second frame, Preston Cantele scored an unassisted goal on a Power Play, Mike Savo with another Power Play goal, this time assisted by Ryan Bunnell. D’Albero also scored in the period, with Defilio on the assist. Finally, in the third period, Defilio scored an unassisted goal to wrap up the action. Mike Fritz allowed one goal in net, while recording 28 saves.
Two days later, the Yellowjackets played host to Daniel Hand and won 7-2 to continue their season dominance. Carter McGlinchey led off the scoring in the first period, with an unassisted goal. The team then tacked on three more goals in the second period. These were scored by Billy Demetriades (assisted by Preston Cantele and Nick Perillo), D’Albero (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey and Carter McGlinchey), and Griffin McGlinchey (assisted by Cantele).
In the third frame of game action, Bunnell added to the scoring with an unassisted goal, followed by Defilio, who was assisted by D’Albero and Griffin McGlinchey. Perillo closed out the scoring, with Demetriades on the assist. Fritz allowed two goals in net, with 27 saves.
East Haven rounded out the week with a trip to North Branford on Jan. 20, where the Yellowjackets faced their first loss of the season at 3-0. Fritz allowed two goals on 34 saves.
Indoor Track
The Morgan boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Old Saybrook Qualifier at Hillhouse on Jan. 17. Top 10 finishes came from Michael Fusco (fifth place in the 300 meter dash with a time of 38.96), the boys’ 4x200 relay team, comprised of Mike Derenzo, Mark Rodriguez, Aidan Campion, and Fusco (fourth place with a time of 1:44.95), and Natalie Estabrook (seventh place in the 1600 with a time of 6:04.91).
In the boys’ 55 meters, Derenzo placed 24th (7.35) and Peter Fortin-Roth placed 72nd (8.42). Fortin-Roth also came in 65th in the 300 (49.43), while Aaron Kennedy placed 69th (50.15). In the 1600, Owen Lombardi (5:37.68) came in 27th, followed by Kaleb Richardson (5:42.03) in 28th. Trevor Leach followed in 33rd, with a time of 5:54.13.
In the shot put, Thomas O’Rourke claimed 36th place (29-00.00), followed by Derenzo in 40th (28-03.00). Jack Bousquet came in 42nd place (27-06.50), and Rowan Quinn took 50th (25-00.00). Rounding out the day in the long jump, Campion took 13th place (17-06.00). He was followed by Rodriguez in 15th (16-11.00), and Bousquet in 25th (14-11.50).
On the girls’ side, Julia White placed 19th in the 55 meters (8.25). Rachel Spaziano (8.46) came in 27th, and Gabriella Navarra (8.82) took 55th. Shania Weisse ran a time of 10.02 for 76th place. Spaziano also took 43rd in the 300 (52.33), and Melanie Pugo took 35th in the 600 (2:15.59). In the long jump, Navarra claimed 18th place (11-10.50), and Estabrook took 22nd (10-09.00). Pugo came in 18th place in the shot put (20-11.50).
Boys’ Basketball
Morgan boys’ basketball hosted Old Lyme on Jan. 19 and won 49-34. Patrick O’Neil and Ryan Donadio scored 14 points each. Jack Nye added 10 points, Robby Estabrook scored seven, and Mason Krott and Luke McComiskey each scored two.
