Wrestling Continues Early-Season Dominance, Girls’ Basketball Records a Win

On Dec. 30, the Guilford wrestling team traveled to the Whippet Duals at Windham to face several different teams. The Grizzlies defeated East Lyme/Norwich Tech by a score of 66-22. Dante Bilskis led things off with a win by fall at 3:30 in the 120-pound bout. Alex Uzzo (132 pounds) recorded a win by fall at 1:34, and Dominic Bilskis (157 pounds) won by fall at 0:30. Jonah Labbadia-Colon (190 pounds by fall at 1:19) and Michael O’Donnell (285 pounds by fall at 4:57) also earned victories.
Guilford also grabbed a commanding 60-15 win over Rockville. Collecting wins for the team were Andrew Plancon at 113 pounds (by fall at 1:05), Dante Bilskis at 120 pounds (by fall at 3:53), Trin Sukduang at 126 pounds (by fall at 3:39) and Elijah McDermott at 144 pounds (by fall at 1:35).
Abdul Sabea helped contribute to the victory with a win by fall at 2:18 of the 150-pound bout, and Dominic Bilskis earned a 13-4 decision in the 157-pound matchup. Garrett Mace won a 5-0 decision for the Grizzlies in the 165-pound contest, while Labbadia-Colon won at 190 pounds by fall (1:25). Tim Hastings competed at 215 pounds and won by fall (0:58) and Ahmed Majeed competed at 285 pounds and won by fall (1:32).
The Grizzlies continued their dominance on the day when they defeated Waterford by a score of 58-24. Several wrestlers had standout performances, including Plancon at 113 pounds (won by fall at 1:02), Dante Bilskis at 120 pounds (won by fall at 0:24), Sukduang at 126 pounds (won by fall at 1:14) and Uzzo at 132 pounds (won by fall at 4:27).
Also recording individual wins for Guilford were Hyde Jacobson at 138 pounds (won by 8-0 major decision), McDermott at 144 pounds (won by fall at 2:00), Dominic Bilskis at 157 pounds (won by fall at 2:58), Mace at 165 pounds (won by fall at 2:59) and Hastings at 215 pounds (won by fall at 0:30).
On Jan. 3, the Grizzlies played host to Daniel Hand and won 50-21. Dante Bilskis won the 120-pound bout by fall at 3:34. Killian Thompson recorded a win by fall at 3:26 in the 126-pound bout, and Uzzo (132 pounds) won by a 5-1 decision. McDermott won by technical fall (17-2) at 144 pounds, while Sam Martocci (150 pounds) won by a 7-3 decision.
Richie Becker competed in the 175-pound matchup and won by a 7-5 decision, and Jean-Paul Meguerditchian won at 190 pounds by fall (1:33). Also earning wins for Guilford were Labbadia-Colon at 215 pounds by fall (3:00) and O’Donnell at 285 pounds by fall (3:20).
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Guilford boys’ ice hockey has had a strong start to the season so far. On Dec. 23, the team traveled to Danbury to face Bethel/Brookfield/Danbury/Immaculate Co-op, where they fell 5-1. Brady Raffone scored the lone goal for Guilford, and it was unassisted. Colin LeTourneau recorded 19 saves in net, and John Maroney recorded six saves.
On Dec. 28, the Grizzlies hosted Yarmouth Cheverus Co-op (out of Maine) and won a 5-4 overtime thriller. Raffone recorded a hat trick with three goals (including the game-winner in OT), and Nate Ponzio found the net for two scores. Assists were recorded by Orion Carney (one), Jacob Corso (one), and Ponzio (one). Brett Pattison recorded 20 saves in net.
The next day, Guilford hosted John Bapst Memorial High School (from Maine) and won 6-3. Goal scorers for the team included Raffone (four), Corso (one), and Kellen Rinehart (one). Assists came from Ponzio (three), Braden Rinehart (one), Bennett Stanger (one), and Corso (one).
Girls’ Basketball
The Guilford girls’ basketball team hosted Jonathan Law on Jan. 2, recording a 50-49 win before falling 43-31 at home vs. Daniel Hand on Jan. 4.
The Grizzlies ended the week on Jan. 5, traveling to Branford and falling 53-44. Captain Keira Reynolds was the leading scorer for Guilford, with 19 points in the contest. She was followed by captain Alexa Kukta with 10 points, and Isabella Lopez Henriquez Meza with five. Other point scorers for Guilford were Alaysia Kittrell (four points), Emelia Votto (three points), and captain Sophie Creamer (two points).
Boys’ Basketball
Guilford boys’ basketball traveled to Cheshire on Jan. 2 and fell 63-52.
On Jan. 5, the team hosted Hillhouse and lost 66-54.
The Grizzlies closed out the week with a 68-35 loss at Daniel Hand on Jan. 6. Several players contributed for Guilford, including Luca Rivera (six points), Anthony Cerino (six points), Quinton Gray (six points), and Jake Gedge (three points).
Noah Young (two points), Jaco Corso (two points), Max Freeman (two points), Tag Ivey (four points), and Liam Cain (two points) also scored. Zach Young contributed in the loss with two points.
