Morgan boys’ basketball hosted its annual Holiday Classic Tournament on Dec. 29. In the championship game vs. Wheeler, the Huskies won 56-38. The leading scorer for Morgan was Patrick O’Neil, who scored 13 points. Jack Nye added 12 points in the win, and was also named Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Robbie Estabrook and Mason Krott each scored nine points, and Estabrook was named to the All-Tournament Team. Ryan Donadio (eight points), Luke McComiskey (three points), and Kolby Clifton (two points) also piled on scores of their own.

The Huskies then played host to North Branford on Jan. 2 and won 86-38. Nye led the way with 20 points, followed by O’Neil, who scored 18 points to stay hot for Morgan. Other scorers included Estabrook (nine points), Donadio (four points), Clifton (nine points), Krott (four points), McComiskey (three points), Kyle Kobelt (eight points), Noah Cinquino (two points), Wyatt Luke (two points), Griffin Ranaudo (two points) and Hunter Mancini (five points).

Morgan finished off the week on Jan. 5, traveling to Valley Regional and grabbing a 65-44 win. Nye scored 24 points in the victory, while O’ Neil was in double digits with 12. Donadio scored 11 points for the Huskies, and Clifton added 10. Kroft (seven points) and Kobalt (one point) also contributed.

The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op team traveled to Cheshire on Dec. 30 and won 5-2. John D’Albero scored twice for the Yellowjackets, with both goals assisted by Lorenzo Defilio. Defilio also recorded two more assists in the game, when Landon Cantele and Griffin McGlinchey scored. Mike Savo scored the final goal for East Haven to secure the win, assisted by Carter McGlinchey. Mike Fritz manned the net, allowing two goals and recording 38 saves.

The team then traveled to Branford on Jan. 3 and won 5-1. Defilio lit up the ice again, scoring four of the Yellowjackets five goals. Landon Cantele also started the action, with a score of his own. Assists on the scores were awarded to Savo, Preston Cantele (two), D’Albero (three), McGlinchey, and Landon Cantele. Fritz allowed one goal on eight saves in net.

The Yellowjackets ended the week on Jan. 6, traveling to Glastonbury and earning a 4-3 overtime win. D’Albero scored two goals for East Haven, including the game-winner in overtime. His goals were assisted by Defilio and Preston Cantele. Cantele also scored two goals of his own, one being unassisted and the other assisted by McGlinchey and Defilio. Fritz let up three goals in net, while recording 33 saves, and the co-op team improved their record to 8-0 while securing a spot in the Division II State Tournament.

On Jan. 4, Morgan boys’ and girls’ indoor track competed in the Shoreline League Meet at Hillhouse. In the boys’ 55 meter dash, Mike Derenzo came in 23rd at 7.60, and Josh Nager finished in 33rd at 7.91. Jack Bousquet (8.08) took 36th, and Thomas O’Rourke took 44th with a time of 8.45. Peter Fortin-Roth (50.93) finished in 35 place.

In the 300 meters, Michael Fusco finished in sixth (39.47) while Josh Nager finished in 29th (47.64). Aaron Kennedy (47.96) came in 30th, and Fortin-Roth (50.93) claimed 35th. Kaleb Richardson finished the 1600 in 14th place (5:36.47), and Owen Lombardi took 16th in that event (5:39.16). Trevor Leach took 21st place with a time of 6:01.16.

The 4x200 meter relay team, comprised of Kennedy, Lombardi, Fusco, and Aidan Campion finished in sixth place with a time of 1:46.2. In boys’ shot put, Bousquet took 28th place (29-04.00) and O’Rourke took 34th (27-04.50). Mike Derenzo claimed 38th place (26-06.00), while Rowan Quinn took 39th (25-02.50). Mark Rodriguez finished the long jump in sixth place (16-08.00) and Bousquet took 10th (15-07.0).

On the girls’ side, Julia White finished the 55 meters in fourth place (8.17) and Rachel Spaziano took 13th (8.51). Gabriella Navarra finished in 27th place with a time of 8.98, while Melanie Pugo took 30th with a time of 9.10. Shania Weisse also participated in that event, coming in 48th with a time of 10.25. In the 300, White came in third (45.85) and Spaziano came in 10th (49.78).

Natalie Estabrook took 12th place in the 600, with a time of 2:02.17. In the long jump, Navarra took 12th (12-06.00), while Estabrook took 14th (12-00.00). Additionally, Navarra came in eighth place in the high jump (3-10.00). In the shot put, Pugo finished in 14th (19-10.50), while Ainsleigh Landino took 16th (19-08.50).
