Football Loses a Tight One, Other Teams Fall in the Playoffs


Football

On Nov. 3, Morgan-Old Saybrook-Westbrook football traveled to Ellington and won 30-22. Freshman Trevor Powell completed 24 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns, and Wes Percival caught 11 passes for 172 yards and a score. Jack Nye ran for 36 yards and a score, and also caught three passes for 41 yards and a touchdown for MSW.

MSW then faced off against rival North Branford on Nov. 10 and fell 37-34. The lead changed five times during the game, and in the end North was able to prevail. Jack Nye got the scoring started for MSW on a screen pass that he took 75 yards for a touchdown, tying things up in the first quarter. Then, when the team was down by six points later in the first quarter, Trevor Powell hooked up with Nye again for a 50-yard touchdown, and with another catch by Nye for the two-point conversion to put Morgan on top 14-12.

In the second quarter, the Huskies drove the ball down the field, and Jacob Jones ran the ball in for another touchdown to make the score 20-12. North Branford ended up putting up another touchdown before the end of the half to close the gap to 20-18.

In the third frame, the Thunderbirds took the lead again with a touchdown to take a 24-20 lead. MSW received the ball back and marched it down the field for a Nye rushing touchdown and successful two-point try to make it a 28-24 game. North branford would go on to score two more touchdowns, and successfully kick a point after try to give them a nine-point lead with 1:50 left on the clock. MSW would add on one more touchdown their score, but it was not enough to catch up.

Nye was the top performer for MSW on the day, with nine catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns, and also adding a rushing touchdown.

Boys’ Soccer

Westbrook boys’ soccer opened up Class S State Tournament play as the No. 22 seed. In the first round on Nov. 7, the Knights traveled to No. 11 Coventry and fell 5-0.

Girls’ Soccer

Girls’ soccer entered state tournament play as the No. 24 seed in Class S. In the first round on Nov. 6, the team traveled to Terryville and lost 4-1.

Field Hockey

Westbrook field hockey played a qualifying game on Oct. 4 vs. No. 18 Northwestern and 1-0 to get into the Class S State Tournament. Then, as the No. 15 seed, the team traveled to Canton for a first-round game on Nov. 7 and lost a tight 2-1 contest.
