Printer Friendly Version - Guilford Girls’ Swimming and Diving Places Third at SCCs, Field Hockey Falls in Quarterfinals

Guilford football hosted East Lyme on Nov. 3 and won 54-14. Tyler Hilgert went 17/23 with 261 yards and five passing touchdowns. Caden Hillier recorded 15 carries for 163 yards (one touchdown) while Hilgert had five carries for 27 yards and one rushing touchdown.

On the receiving side of the ball, Jake Jahnige had six receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Ridley had two receptions for 33 yards and one touchdown. Hillier contributed with two receptions for 20 yards and one touchdown, and Joe Tafro had three receptions for 30 yards. Buddy Gambardella hauled in one reception for seven yards and one touchdown. Alex Tafro also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score.

Guilford girls’ soccer earned the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, facing No. 7 Hamden in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28 and winning 6-2.

In the semifinals on Oct. 30, the Grizzlies faced third-seeded Cheshire and fell 2-1 in overtime.

Guilford field hockey earned a spot in the SCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. In the quarterfinals on Oct. 28, the Grizzlies fell victim to No. 7 Sacred Heart Academy by a score of 2-1 in overtime.

Two Guilford players were named to the All-Conference First Team for their efforts this fall. Those athletes were Tania Evans and Payton Root.

No. 4 Guilford defeated No. 13 Foran by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-21) in the first round of the SCC Tournament on Oct. 27. In the quarterfinals on Oct. 30, the Grizzlies defeated No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15).

On Nov. 1, Guilford faced off against top-seeded Amity Regional in the semifinals and fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 25-13).

On Nov. 1, the Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team competed in the SCC Finals, after qualifying at SCC Trials on Oct. 30. The girls came in third place overall out of 16 teams, giving them back-to-back third place finishes in the SCC with 837 points. Guilford narrowly edged out rival Madison by 30 points, and the Grizzlies were led by Head Coach Jenn Amasino.

The 200-yard medley relay placed fifth, with a team consisting of senior Sorina Cheng, sophomore Liana Clune, senior Isabella Blanco, and freshman Muiriel Rader, with a time of 1:59.03. Junior Isabel Torello placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.08) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:22.12), earning All-SCC in both events. Sophomore Clara Matos da Cruz came in 13th place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.98, and ninth place in the 500 freestyle (5:44.92).

Cheng swam the 200 individual medley (2:19.32) and came in eighth place, and also swam the 100 backstroke (1:02.38) and came in fourth place. Junior Kate Young came in 13th in the 200 individual medley (2:24.49) and came in eighth in the 100 freestyle (56.94). Junior Taylor Nowak also swam the 200 individual medley (2:32.79) and came in 28th place, while also coming in 24th place in the 100 freestyle (1:00.79).

Sophomore Aislin Cohen took first place in the 50 freestyle (24.91) and took second place in the 100 freestyle (54.25), earning All-SCC for both events. Rader came in 13th in the 50 freestyle (27.28) and 19th in the 100 freestyle (1:00.27). Blanco placed 20th in the 50 freestyle (27.77) and 18th in the 100 butterfly (1:08.78). Senior Sofia Tian swam the 50 freestyle (27.86) and placed 22nd, and also placed 24th in the 100 butterfly (1:11.85). Sophomore Hannah Brown placed 24th (28.00) and Junior Amy Shi placed 25th (28.02) in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Gina Dong placed 28th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:14.72, and 29th in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.57).

Freshman Abigail Fernandez came in 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:46.01) and 13th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.65). Junior Evelyn Bertolini came in 17th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:55.86, and 26th in the 100 backstroke (1:11.39). The girls’ 200 freestyle relay took third place and consisted of Cheng, Young, Torello, and Cohen. They raced to a time of 1:42.15. Freshman Sophia Chicarilli came in 28th in the 100 backstroke (1:12.02), while Clune took sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.93. Junior Zoe Maitre took 26th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.16). Guilford took second place in the 400 freestyle relay, earning the four swimmers on the team All-SCC honors. The team consisted of Young, Torello, Rader, and Cohen, and posted a time of 3:45.16. Junior Jordyn Gould placed second at diving SCC’s on Oct. 28 with a score of 407.25, earning All-SCC distinction.
