Branford Field Hockey Falls in Conference Semis, Football Wins Big

Football

The Branford football team hit the road to Wilbur Cross on Nov. 3 and won in blowout fashion, 44-0. Touchdowns for the Hornets were scored by Nate Florio (three), Akiel Lomotey (two), and Cole Snider. Christopher Desiderio also recorded a sack for a safety. Florio’s scores consisted of a four-yard run, 28-yard run, and 24-yard punt return. Lomotey had a 12-yard run and a four-yard run, and Snider had a 27-yard run.

Field Hockey

Branford field hockey opened the SCC Tournament on Oct. 28 as the No. 6 seed, defeating No. 3 Cheshire 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Two days later, the Hornets faced No. 7 Sacred Heart Academy in the semifinals, ending in a 1-1 tie. SHA advanced in the contest via penalty strokes (2-1).

Reanna Sachs was named All-SCC First Team for her efforts this season, while Tate Jones and Ellie Wieland were named to the Second Team.

Girls’ Volleyball

Hornets volleyball was the No. 7 seed in the SCC Tournament. In the first round on Oct. 27, Branford faced No. 10 Sheehan and won 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21).

On Oct. 30, Branford faced No. 2 Cheshire in the quarterfinals and took a 3-0 loss (26-24, 25-12, 25-16).

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Branford girls’ swimming and diving had its last dual meet of the season on Oct. 24, doubling as the Senior Meet. Captains Izzie Armellino, Malak Elweheshy, and Ridhima Shrestha were recognized, along with Carmella Lippolis, Grace Ricciardelli (diver), Claudia Romano, Lasang Subba, and manager Kayda Tope. The Hornets had stellar performances, with second place finishes from junior Kylie Acquarulo-Savastano in the 200 freestyle (2:27.42), and sophomore Summer Sabatino in the 200 IM (2:41.91). Freshman Audrina Pham came in first in the 50 freestyle (27.39) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.20). Diver Emerson Shuff (junior) placed first in diving.

On Oct. 30, the team competed in the SCC Trials in Cheshire, with senior Armellino (100 butterfly 1:12.74, 100 breaststroke 1:23.38), junior Erin Newlan (200 freestyle 2:29.78), sophomore Sabatino (100 breaststroke 1:23.99), and freshman Pham (200 IM & 50 freestyle) making the Finals on Nov. 1.

Best times were clocked in for senior Elweheshy in the 100 backstroke (1:38.88), senior Subba in the 50 freestyle (34.06), freshman Izabella Johnstone in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, junior Avery Maymon in the 50 and 100 freestyle, sophomore Bidhee Thapa in the 50 freestyle (32.58), junior Acquarulo-Savastano in the 50 freestyle (29.15), sophomore Abigal Talalas in the 100 backstroke (1:18.77), and junior Newlan in the 500 freestyle (6:49. 33).
