Guilford football traveled to Bassick on Oct. 20 and won 47-0.
On the rushing side, Caden Hillier had four rushes for 69 yards (two touchdowns). Kevin Smith had one rush for 24 yards, and Alex Tafro had three rushes for 108 yards. Alex Uzzo had two rushes for five yards with one touchdown.
Tyler Hilgert went 5/5 on passing, with 101 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Jahnige had three receptions (48 yards, three touchdowns). Joe Tafro added one reception (30 yards) and Trevor Ridley had one reception (12 yards).
Boys’ Soccer
The Guilford boys’ soccer team traveled to West Haven on Oct. 16 and lost 3-2. Goals for the Grizzlies were scored by Wyatt Sprenkle and Andres Gutierrez. Jameson Benben recorded two saves in net, and Anthony Malatesta recorded one.
Two days later, the team traveled to Cheshire, where they recorded a 2-1 defeat. Gutierrez scored the lone goal for the Grizzlies. Benben recorded two saves, while Malatesta added one.
The team ended the week on Oct. 20, hosting Wilbur Cross and tying 1-1. Owen Medvecky scored Guilford’s goal, and it was assisted by Sprenkle. Benben had two saves and Malatesta had one.
Girls’ Soccer
Grizzlies girls’ soccer hit the road to Amity on Oct. 16 and tied 1-1. On Oct. 18, the team hosted Career/Hillhouse and won 7-0 before falling 2-1 at Sheehan on Oct. 20.
Field Hockey
The Guilford field hockey team faced Lauralton Hall on the road on Oct. 17 and won 6-5 in overtime. On Oct. 21, the team played host to North Haven and won 5-0 on Senior Day.
Leading the scoring was senior Payton Root with five goals, and sophomore Hailey Farace with a hat trick vs. Lauralton Hall, including the overtime winner. Other scorers were Tania Evans, Cassie Ward, and Zoe Tsoukanelis, all with one goal.
Girls’ Volleyball
Girls’ volleyball traveled to North Haven on Oct. 16 and won 3-2. On Oct. 20, the team hosted Jonathan Law and grabbed a 3-0 victory.
Boys’ Cross Country
Guilford boys’ cross country competed in the SCC Championship on Oct. 18 and found a lot of success. They placed second overall as a team with a score of 112. Coleman Love took 10th place with a time of 16:51.3, while Alex Hansen was closely behind in 12th place (17:07.0). Cooper Woods finished the race in 26th place (17:45.2) and Aaron Kowalonek took 28th (17:52.6). Eli Green-Perez took 37th on the course (18:06.3).
Girls’ Cross Country
On Oct. 18, Grizzlies girls’ cross country raced in the SCC Championship, where they dominated the competition and claimed third place as a club, finishing with a team score of 77. Ciara Davenport finished the race in sixth place (20:01.3) while teammate Clara Gahm came in ninth in a time of 20:36.9. Olivia Jackson took 15th place (21:06.1) and Summer Mangan followed in 25th (21:44.6). Ana Sadlon was right behind her in 26th, finishing the race in 21:46.9.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
On Oct. 16, Guilford girls’ swimming and diving defeated Jonathan Law with a score of 99-79. Senior Sorina Cheng, junior Isabel Torello, freshman Muiriel Rader, and senior Isabella Blanco won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:03.10. Torello also won the 200 freestyle (2:04.16) and had the fastest time in the 100 backstroke in exhibition (1:09.51). Freshman Aislin Cohen came in first in the 200 individual medley (2:22.95) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.31).
Junior Jordyn Gould won the diving with a score of 259.35, which also broke the pool record. Cheng took first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.03) and posted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke in exhibition (1:15.47). Rader won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.29. Cheng, Rader, freshman Abigail Fernandez, and Cohen took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.83). Junior Kate Young, junior Clara Matos Da Cruz, Torello, and Cohen posted the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay in exhibition (4:00.94).
