Hand Football Routs Law for Fourth-Straight Shutout; Girls’ Swimming Triumphs on Senior Night

Football

Hand football traveled to Jonathan Law on Oct. 13 and claimed a 30-0 victory in the contest. The lopsided victory marked the fourth-consecutive shutout for the Tigers.

Boys’ Soccer

Hand boys’ soccer hosted Shelton on Oct. 9 and won 1-0. Eli Ackerman scored the lone goal, and it was assisted by Ernesto Barrosa.

On Oct. 12, the team traveled to Branford and recorded a 2-0 win. The Tigers ended the week on Oct. 14, hitting the road to Shelton and battling the Gaels to a 0-0 tie.

Girls’ Soccer

Girls’ soccer started the week hosting Jonathan Law on Oct. 10, finishing in a 1-1 tie.

Hand played host to Morgan on Oct. 13 and tied 1-1 again. In this game, Lily Payne recorded four saves in net.

Girls’ Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball team played host to Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 10 and collected a 3-0 victory in three sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-14). The Tigers played a cohesive game, featuring senior captain and outside hitter Arianna Takyar recording seven kills and seven digs. Junior defensive specialist Grace Hall had 11 digs, and junior libero Julia Gallo had eight digs and three aces.

The next day, the Tigers traveled to Sacred Heart Academy, where they lost 3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 10-25, 25-20, 12-15). In this match, Takyar had 17 digs and 13 kills, and senior captain and setter Ella D’Urso had 19 assists and 12 digs. Gallo recorded 27 digs and three aces, while senior middle blocker Amy Totten had six kills and four blocks.

North Haven came to town on Oct. 13 and Hand won 3-2 in a five-set battle (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 10-25, 15-3). Defensive specialists and juniors Grace Hall and Taylor Ferraiolo were the unsung heroes of the match with their dependable serving. A well-timed ace by Hall in the second set when Hand was down 21-18 changed the momentum of the match. Ferraiolo followed with a four-point serving run, including two aces, unfazed by two North Haven timeouts. The pair followed up in similar fashion in the fifth set, which Hall led off with a four-point service run that included a second ace. Ferraiolo continued the streak with a seven-point service run that included two aces for a total of five aces in the match. The pair earned 19 and 17 digs, respectively.

In addition, Takyar recorded 13 kills, 20 digs, and two aces, while senior middle blocker Mia Thomas had 14 kills and a season-high five blocks. Gallo contributed with 30 digs and four aces, including three in a row in the third set, and D’Urso added 12 digs and 26 assists.

Field Hockey

Hand field hockey hit the road to face Cheshire on Oct. 11 and won 1-0. Ellie Flynn scored the lone goal for the Tigers, assisted by Jacqueline Kennedy. Goalie Faith Minickene recorded two saves in net.

Two days later, the team hosted Branford and recorded a 1-0 overtime win. The lone score came on a penalty stroke from Jordan Kells. Minickene had nine saves in goal.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

On Oct. 2, the Hand girls’ swimming and diving team traveled to Amity and fell 104-80. The girls’ 200 medley relay team consisting of Seorin Kim, Lucy Schwarz, Molly Hoban, and Norah Stotz came in third place with a time of 2:14.97. Samantha Chemacki won the 200 freestyle (2:04.62), followed by Lillian Miller in second place (2:05.91). Anna Jacob finished the 200 individual medley in second place (2:30.10). Kim (28.21) placed second in the 50 freestyle, and Stotz (28.66) followed closely behind in fourth.

Hadley Reiss claimed first place in the 1-meter dive (220.25), and Ella Speerli (197.80) took second place. Georgia Cohen (165.15) took third place in that event. Sofia Rastelli came in third place in the 100 butterfly (1:10.16), while Haley Wines (1:02.71) took third in the 100 freestyle. Chemacki won the 500 free (5:30.42) followed by Miller in second (5:48.62). In the 200 free relay, Jacob, Wines, Kim, and Chemacki finished in second in a time of 1:49.34. Hand also won the 400 free relay in a time of 4:07.12. This team consisted of Miller, Kim, Wines, and Chemacki.

On Oct. 5, the Tigers faced off against Guilford on the road and lost 96.5-86.5. Kim, Chemacki, Miller, and Jacob won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:58.98. Chemacki took second in the 200 free (2:05.57) and Hoban took third in the 200 IM (2:31.08).

Jacob claimed second place in the 50 free (27.03) and Reiss took second in the 1-meter dive (204.80). Miller won the 100 butterfly (1:04.96), and Jacob finished in second in the 100 free (1:00.13). Miller finished the 100 backstroke in second (1:07.72), while Chemacki won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.08). Jacob, Wines, Miller, and Chemacki came in first place in the 400 free relay (4:01.69).

The next meet for Hand was on Oct. 9, when the Tigers hosted North Haven on Senior Night and won 89-73. Miller, Chemacki, Speerli, and Olivia Gordon won the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:09.58. That team was followed in second place by Stotz, Amelia Lesnik, Emily Butler, and Jacob (2:10.53). Wines won the 200 free (2:17.78), and Schwarz came in second (2:18.30).

In the 200 IM, Hoban finished in first place (2:32.88), and Stotz followed in second (28.13). Rachel Gentil (30.74) finished in third. Chemacki recorded a time of 1:07.95 in the 100 butterfly to win the event, and teammate Jacob claimed second with a finishing time of 1:10.19. Miller won the 100 free (59.57), followed by Butler in third (1:06.88).

Wines raced to a first-place finish in the 500 free (6:08.30) Schwarz placed second (6:09.70). Alyssa Gentil (7:05.25) took third. In the 200 free relay, Jacob, Hoban, Gordon, and Speerli came in first with a finishing time of 2:04.65.

On Oct. 12, the Tigers traveled to face Fitch/Stonington/Wheeler/New London. The 200 medley relay team of Seorin Kim, Samantha Chemacki, Lillian Miller, and Anna Jacob recorded a second-place finish with a time of 2:02.07. Miller also took second in the 200 freestyle (2:08.99). Chemacki won the 200 IM, recording a time of 2:20.37, while teammate Kim finished the 50 freestyle in third place (28.30). Sofia Rastelli took third in the 100 butterfly (1:08.63), and Jacob placed third in the 100 freestyle (1:01.30).

Schwarz (6:09.62) placed third in the 500 freestyle, while Chemacki, Haley Wines, Rastelli, and Jacob placed second in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:51.71. Kim placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:08.86), Chemacki won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.64), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Miller, Kim, Norah Stotz, and Wines earned a first-place finish (4:18.88).
